Curious to know if it is possible to run a a basic Epson 4-ink printer like the Epson C88+ with QTR?

No, QTR does not support these; see http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRrequire.html. However, these basic 4-ink printers can make very good B&W printers with the Epson driver. Photoshop curves can control them, and those curves can be embedded in ICC with QTR's Create ICC-RGB.

For a very simple B&W setup , see http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/C88-C13-5.pdf . Some time ago MIS sold a setup they called the "EZ" approach. It was, and worked fairly well. Google will find a number of different setups I've used or set up for others in order to get good digital printing to those on the lowest budgets.

Today, I have an Epson 1100 that has two black inks for very fast text printing. In a pinch it can also be made to print very good, primarily or 100% carbon pigment prints that will look great many years after the Epson OEM ink prints have faded and discolored.

FWIW

Paul,

Thank you for the information. I was hoping to set this up for a friend as an inexpensive printer for making small digital negatives with a simple straight line profile where all curves follow the K. If I can find an inexpensive way to fill all the cartridges with black ink I may try running it with the Epson driver and embedding an icc with the QTR Create-ICC-RGB as you suggest. That might actually be easier for the friend to use.

Sandy,

With the Epson driver you probably can't get more pigment on the film than with just a single K, with the paper type set to the old Archival Matte or Ultra Premium Presentation paper -- whatever they are calling it these days. If you have K in the color spots, their may well be a flat flat spot when the colors cross-over to the K, starting about 75%. In making the curves for Create ICC-RGB, I believe there is also a requirement that at least one of the curves must go the full length (horizontal axis) without the slope getting too low or negative. (Working from old memory here...)

Good luck. I'll be curious what you find works.

Paul
