Advice for a New Printer

Advice for a New Printer

2019-01-12 by CatherineCostolo

Hey! It appears that my R2880 has died and so I am looking to buy a new printer possibly the Epson 400, 600, or 800. I want to do digital negs and will be using the Piezo inks from inkjet mall.
Any recommendations as to which of the above printers would be best? I know I could use any one of the printers to do digital negatives but wonder if anyone has any experience to share.
Thanks.

I believe there are some issues regarding the use of third party ink cartridges in the Epson 800.I suggest you contact the folks at Inkjet Mall for details.

Hi there.
I use the P800 to do my digital negs. I use the original epson ink and went to the trouble of creating curves to perfect the negatives density and contrast.

If you use third party inks, be sure you have the right correction curves or you won’t get the results you expect.
Creating curves for digital negs is a laborious and complex task.

I like the Epson because it has a wide community support and cheaper to operate due to the bigger cartridge.

-Felix

Ps. The curves for the 2880 are completely different than for the P800 due to the new inks.

Thanks for your answers. After reading some of the info about the printers on the inkjet mall website I may try to buy a 3800 or 3880.

I would still like to hear from others who may be using the P400, P600, or P800 printers to print digital negatives. I looked for the 3800 and 3880 printers online and there are not many to choose from.
Thanks.

Hi Catherine,

I use the P600 with EPSON HD inks and I can say it is excellent for DN and image prints. P800 is cheaper in terms of printing and you can print 4'' wider paper or roll. P500 doesn't use the range of black/grays like P600

hope that helps

With regards to availability of 3880 Printers I purchased 2 refurb units from Epson last Fall after monitoring the Epson Refurb Printer Website for many months. It seems that when they become available, the supply is sold quickly - no surprise!
Good luck

If you're only doing dig neg, and given that you'll be using the IJM PiezoDN system, you might also consider an R1430. You could probably also print on matte papers using K6 curves. If you want to print both glossy and matte papers in addition to dig neg then perhaps the P400.

I regard the carts-on-head printers like the R1430 and P400 as being easier to maintain and also easier to deal within pigment sedimentation in the inks than the ink-lines-and-dampers printers. They do come at a cost of more frequent refilling, which may be an issue for higher volume, regular printers.

I bought a p800 six months ago and was initially quite upset I could not do piezography with it. Now I have tuned print flows both for normal printing and digital negatives for silver and both are working great with stock inks at least to my eye(and I am next moving on to kalltypes/pt printing).

One note: if you import a p800 from Europe or Taiwan you can still use 3d party inks so if you really care that is one route you can go.

You can do Piezo on it though. It requires a decoder board but we have many many customers using it for Piezo (in US).

It just took is awhile is all. Epson doesn’t make it easy.

Thanks for all your replies. I found an unused 2880 on eBay and bought that. Since I already have the cartridges for that printer, buying the unused one seemed like a good idea.
I hope to get started when it arrives next week. I am tired of starting the digital neg process and then stopping, letting several months go by and then beginning again.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Advice for a New Printer

Yeah, I definitely should have mentioned this option for an american p800. I think that it is super cool that you guys have figured this out. However, the issues holding me back personally from going this route, even though I am sorely tempted, are the following:

1) multiple hundreds of dollars of cost.
2) it voids the warranty, so if anything goes wrong I can't get it fixed for free (I bought the extra length service contract).
3) it may be rendered inoperable by software updates at any time.
4) it is only useable for a certain amount of ink swaps, after that I guess your printer is dead. Sure, I may never do that many ink swaps in the lifetime of the printer but it still is an issue for me to buy something that is fundamentally limited.

I can't express my frustration with epson enough for their underhanded behavior. If I would have known about the inability to use whatever inks I would have wanted I would not have bought the p800. However, I am getting good results even from stock inks so retrospectively I feel like I have made some fairly tasty lemonade from the lemons epson gave me.

I feel you. I so do.

Related to Epson: They currently have a class action against them for their firmware locks. Fingers crossed.

I have a P400 and am quite happy with it. I use it to print PiezoDN digital negatives, and have printed several hundred, from 8.5x11's to 11x17's, without any problems. My only complaint is the frequency with which you'll need to refill cartridges. Digital negatives use a lot of ink. I can print maybe a dozen 8.5x11's when the printer tells me the ink is getting low. But as someone else in this discussion said, you'll have fewer problems with the desktop printers, with cartridges that sit directly on the print head, than you'll have with 'pro' printers with large stationary ink tanks.

Inkjetmall has an inexpensive chip resetter for the P400, so you will not have trouble using their cartridges unless Epson has changed the firmware since I purchased mine. I don't know how you'd check this before you buy. But once you do buy, be sure that you don't accept any firmware updates. An update might invalidate the use of third party cartridges. This warning applies to all Epson printers, not just the P400.
