newbie question

2006-02-07 by Paulo Baptista

Hello,
I'm a brazilian photographer and my personal work is mainly large format
landscapes. I've recently joined this list, and yesterday I began to try to
setup QTR for printing on an Epson 7600 with UC inks (I work on a G4
running OS 10.3.9). Although I've read Roy Harrington's Basic Tutorial, Tom
Moore's User Guide and Carl Schofield's mini tutorial, along with many
useful messages on this list, I'm still quite unsure as to how set the
whole thing up. I've downloaded and installed QTR 2.3.5, and plan to start
printing on Epson Premium Luster paper.
I have assumed from some of Roy Harrington's replies to the list that the
steps necessary for determining ink limits, partitioning the grayscale
range and linearizing the grayscale output, prior to generating the paper's
curves, could be carried on the software's graphic interface, instead of
editing quad descriptor files on a text editor, but I just couldn't find
out how to do that (I believe one can do that on the Windows version of
QTR) . I searched the list's files for more recent information, but
couldn't find any. Is there a tutorial written for the most recent versions
of QTR (for Macs)? Or should I follow Carl Schofield's instructions and
work directly on the .qidf files?
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Paulo

Hi Scott,
thanks for the reply; I have thought so, but couln't find curves for the Epson
Premium Luster I have on the printer. On the Curves box of the QTR interface,
there are otions for Epson's Enhanced Matte, UltraSmooth and Velvet FineArt,
Hahnemulle PhotoRag, Moab Entrada and another one named "NoK-
EPhotoPaper", which I'm not sure for what paper it is. Do you, or anyone on
the list, have suggestions about which curves would be more adequate for
printing on Premium Luster on a UC7600 (using PK black)?
Regards,
Paulo

Hi Paulo,

As you've seen there's not much for the photo papers on the 7600.
I haven't had access to a 7600 with the photo black.
The one NoK profile can be used but it use no black ink -- useful if you
have matte black ink loaded. But I think there's a bigger issue of
bronzing / differential reflections with that ink. Even if you make
great
profiles the bronzing on B&W prints with the original UltraChrome inks
seems to be particularly annoying.
