QuadToneRIP version 2.4 released, Mac & PC

QuadToneRIP version 2.4 released, Mac & PC

2006-03-02 by Roy Harrington

QuadToneRIP version 2.4.0 Release Notes

   QTRgui version 2.4.0.1
   QTR-Create-ICC version 2.4.0.0
   QTR-Create-ICC RGB version 2.4.0.0
   QTR-Linearize-Data version 2.4.0.0

This release may be installed directly over older versions.

All new profiles for Neutral K7 ink printers: 21/2200, 4000, 76/9600, R8/R1800.

Printer enhancements:

R2400 - added printing resolution of 1440x1440 dpi & 1440x1440 super
(probably the best compromise between speed and quality)

R1800 - added support for Manual-Roll feeder for heavy papers

The QTR-Create-ICC & Linearize-Data tools now have the capability to average
several measurements. There is a new target and a reference file
for a 21x4 stepwedge. The 21 steps are printed out four times and
you should scan/read all of them. I believe this method should give the best profiles.

QTR-Create-ICC-RGB now supports the incorporation of Photoshop .acv curves.
This allows usage of RGB Epson driver where ink partitioning is done with PS curves,
including the linearization of the grayscale output. This greatly simplies the workflow.
Before, one needed to take a grayscale image, convert to RGB, apply ACV curves, and then
print. Now this is all included in the ICC printing profile with the added benefit that
color management will automatically convert from the grayscale embedded profile.
The profile can also be used for soft-proofing in most cases.

QTRgui now checks that you have used a Curve/Profile in printing

I just downloaded the new 2.4.0 version of QTR and when opening a
curve an error message is generated about too many errors in ink
description and lists all the inks listed in the profile being used
with the message error in ink description and lists the line number.
I've tried opening your curves and also mine I've created. Has anyone
else reported this error?

It happens in the Windows XP version with UT2 inks on the Epson 1280
printer at the beginning of the curve creation process. This happened
the very first time I opened the program. I backed up and uninstalled
the previous version before installing the 2.4.0 version.

Be sure that the printer description selected matches the curve you are trying
to load. Different printers use different ink names. What curve were you
opening?

Re: QuadToneRIP version 2.4 released, Mac & PC

The printing model is listed as Epson 1280-UT2 and when curve creation
is selected a window pops up titled "Quadtone Front End and shows File
Not Found". When I close that error message the Curve Creator un-named
window pops up. An attempt to open an ink descriptor file Roy has
provided as part of the package opens another window with error
messages listing the line jumber of the ink descriptor files and the
contents of that line. For example "error in ink descriptor file line
8 -> "LIMIT K -"

Hi Johnny,

We made some changes to cut down on duplicate ppd files but it looks
like one situation was missed. There's an easy work around for it
until
a fix is done.

Go into in \Program Files\QuadToneRIP\PPD\ folder.
There are a bunch of ppd files. Open Quad1280.ppd in Notepad and then
do a
Save As: Quad1280-UT2.ppd -- i.e. just duplicate it with a new name.

You should now be able to do everything as before.

Roy,

Thanks so much for the solution. That solved the problem. It seems
that sometime the simple things give us the most trouble and the most
difficult to solve.

Your friend in Photography,

Johnny

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: QuadToneRIP version 2.4 released, Mac & PC

2006-03-02 by Stephen Billard

OK.

The ink descriptor file errors are a secondary problem. The real problem is the
file not found. We have discovered the cause of this error and are working on a
fix. You can make a work-around by copying the file c:/Program
Files/QuadToneRIP/ppd/Quad1280.ppd as c:/Program
Files/QuadToneRIP/ppd/Quad1280-UT2.ppd.

Of course if you have installed QuadToneRIP in a different folder, make the
appropriate changes to the file path.

Be sure that the printer description selected matches the curve you are trying
to load. Different printers use different ink names. What curve were you
opening?

"Printer not responding" message on 2200

2006-03-03 by Alan Eckert

For some time I have happily used QTR on my Epson 2200. It developed
severe paper handling problems and Epson replaced it with a refurbished
printer under warranty. The "new" printer seems to work fine -- as
long as I use Epson's driver. When I use QTR, which worked happily
with my previous printer, nothing happens, and when I call up the
"Quadtone RIP" icon from the dock, it says "Printer not responding."
Can anyone help?

What OS?

Go into the Print Utility and remove the QTR printer, then re-
install. I had to do that once on for my 4000 after a OS Update.

OS 10.3.9. I tried your suggestion, which of course I have to do every
time I change from matte to photo black or back again. I was able to
delete the Quad 2200 driver, but when I clicked on "Add printer," it
couldn't find the Quad 2200 driver. Do I need to lead Printer Setup
Utility by the hand to where the driver is? If so, where is it?

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] "Printer not responding" message on 2200

2006-03-03 by Alan Kearney

Alan, my 4000 is connected by Ethernet and when I Add Printer the
Apple utility sometimes presents me with a button on the bottom left
of the dialog box that says something like "More Printers". I'm
trying to think of the days when I was running 10.2.4, jump 10.3.9,
and I may have had to tell the utility what type of connection I was
using. USB, Firewire, Appletalk, Ethernet, Epson USB, etc......

Now it's not an issue, my printer just pops right up.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help but I still think the problem is
in the Printer Utility > Add Printer.

If you had a network card you could assign an IP address but.....

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] "Printer not responding" message on 2200

2006-03-03 by Roy Harrington

The USB connection is based on the serial number of the printer.
(That's so you can have multiple 2200 printers connected if you wanted
them).

So if you get a new printer you must Delete the old Quad2200 using
Printer Setup Utility.
Then re-run the Profiles/2100-2200-UC/Install2200 script in the
download.
This will create a new Quad2200 printer and connect the USB to the new
printer.

QTR update

2006-03-03 by Alan Kearney

Ray, I've been meaning to update QTR on my G5 so after the announcement of
version 2.4 I went to your web site and downloaded it. I got the profiles,
support tutorials and an "Installer" ICON. When I click the installer I'm
presented with a "no file to install"!

Any ideas if I'm doing something wrong?

Thanks, Alan

Re: QTR update

2006-03-03 by Roy Harrington

Alan,

I'm not sure where you are finding the "Installer" Icon.
To install the software just click on the Install-QTR-2.4.0.pkg -- is that what you
found on the download? The other issue is the printer change. You must delete
the printer in Printer Setup Utility, and then run Profiles/2100-2200-UC/Install2200

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: QTR update

2006-03-03 by Alan Kearney

Roy, that's a different Alan with the 2200 printer problem. I'm
printing from my G5 to my Epson 4000 Pro via Ethernet. I'd downloaded
an earlier version of QTR but never got into printing B&W, except the
occasional trial using the ColorBurst RIP that came with my printer.

I now have a project that I'd like to do in B&W and I noticed your
announcement 2 days ago(?) about QTR 2.4 being released. When I
downloaded it I get a "QuadToneRIP2.3.1.dmg" , which expands into a
drive ICON. Inside that drive ICON are the following;

Install-QTR-2.3.1.pkg
Remove-QTR.pkg
Tutorial.pdf
DiagnosticScript
CurveDesign folder
Profiles folder

Inside the Profiles folder I find one folder for 4000-UC(I'm using UC
inks) and 2 sets, one says "Install4000" and one says "Install4000ipp"

I've installed the Install4000.

When I soft proof I have the option of using QTR-Matte (RGB), or
selecting the paper profile for the paper I'm using and "MK", which
I'm guessing is for B&W?

So, when I double click on Install-QTR-2.3.1.pkg I go through about 4
screens to accept license, continue, select drive, and then finally
Install. That's when I'm told there is "nothing to install".

Attached is a "Grab capture of the QTR screen when I go to print.

Finally, QTR update

2006-03-03 by Alan Kearney

Boy do I feel like a dummy. I'd been downloading from your old web
site, but even though the link said new QTR it was still the 2.3
version! I just went to the "new" site and downloaded and installed
the 2.4 update.

Duh, Alan

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] "Printer not responding" message on 2200

2006-03-03 by Alan Eckert

Thanks very much, Roy. That was it. Among the things I tried to solve
my problem was downloading and installing the 2.4 version of QTR, but I
didn't realize I had to delete the Quad2200 printer in OS X's Printer
Setup Utility before I ran the profiles script. Now everything is
humming along as before.

Has the way .ppd files work changed now? 2.4.0 overwrote my custom .ppd
files (I have back ups) and I was getting the 'file not found' message
when going into curve creation. Now, with 2.4.1 I'm not getting the
'file not found' message with a custom printing model even though I
haven't yet restored the .ppd files. Are they no longer required?

Thanks

Hi Howard,

There is a change in ppd file usage. The first implementation of
"inknames"
just duplicated the ppd so you have for instance:
    ppd files Quad2200.ppd, Quad2200-UT7.ppd, Quad2200-NK7.ppd
They are identical duplicates with the names matching the folder names
for the profiles.
The change is that the code now looks for the ppd with the inkname
chopped off.
So for a special ink such as: Quad2200-Howard you don't need to
duplicate
the ppd file, just make your special profile folder.
