Doug,
You are correct in your understanding. You would have to use dedicated
B&W ink carts to create quality B&W prints. With the older printers, I
believe you'd have to flush the heads in between color and B&W
inksets. Some of the inks, such as the Cone inks, are now compatible
with Epson inks, reducing the need to flush the heads, however, I
believe that's only the case with the Epson pigment inks.
You might try to find a used printer on eBay, or the like, to get your
2nd printer -- much cheaper option than a new one. Unfortunately,
other than ink swap, there are no other inexpensive options.
