High light black usage. Is that normal ?

High light black usage. Is that normal ?

2006-07-09 by René Bakker

Dear group,

I normally print with Ultrachrome/Eboni combination on matte papers.
My default setting is EEM 80% warm, 20% sepia
My observation is that the color cartridges are almost equaly going
empty, the black usage is somewaht higher, but the light black usage
is more then twice is much as the use of color ink.

On itself it is no problem because I always by some more licht black
cacarts. But the downside of this effect is that I also waste relative
more color inks because if you change one of the carts, the initial
flush procedure will have effect on all the cartridges.

So my question is: is it normal that I use so much light black ?

Kind regards,
Rene Bakker

Rene,

Yes, this is normal. Most QTR profiles use LK and K with small amounts of
LC and LM for toning. In my experience with UC inks, the usage is LK most,
K second most and then LC and LM. Depending on the profile used; C, M and Y
are typically not used (unless you are printing sepia and using Y - since
you print sepia, you should see Y usage). But as you note, all are used up
by some amount when you change cartridges and go through cleaning cycles.

You didn't mention what printer you have, but with the 2200 (and my guess
the 2100 as well) if you press the ink button to move the head to the change
cartridge position and when you change the cartridge, don't press the ink
button again. Instead power the printer off and back on and you will not go
through the cleaning cycle. Several on this forum have noted that this will
save ink.
