Epson R800 printing problem

Epson R800 printing problem

2006-11-09 by gefphoto

I actually do have some computer background but this problem has me
stumped. I have been using an Epson R800 for a while with Epson color
inks and Photoshop and everything works fine. I am running a fairly
current PC with large hard drives and lots of memory. I purchased and
installed a set of Piezography Neutral K7 inks and downloaded and
installed the latest Quad Tone RIP software. I ran the profile
generator and printed out the grey zone bars which looked great for a
first time test. I took a photo file and edited it changing it to a
B&W image and then saved it as a TIFF file so I could open it in
QuadtoneRIP. I cannot get it to print at all. The printer goes through
the motions moving the paper through the printer and the print heads
move back and forth as if it were printing but I don't get an image.
It has got to be some simple thing but I cannot figure it out. Any
suggestions?

Have you tried reading the User Guide?

I read it word for word following every step. And your real suggestion
is ..... ?

Another comment. The latest instructions don't actually match the most
up to date version of the QuadtoneRIP software. The screen captures
are the most noticeable difference right off the bat.

My question wasn't rhetorical. I was (and am still)having difficulty
understanding your terminology. For example, by "profile generator" do
you mean the Curve Creation feature or the QTR_Create_ICC feature of
QuadtoneRIP. I'm not sure what you mean by "grey zone bars" and how
you printed them.

As for the K7 inks, I don't use them, but I understand that Cone
provides curves for them for various papers. Are you using those
curves or are you trying to create your own?

The appearance of QTRgui has changed recently and I haven't updated
the QTR User Guide for quite a while. However, if you look closely,
you'll see that there is not much functional difference between the
current GUI and that for which the guide was created. The more
important deficiency of the Guide is the absence of any description of
the use of color management a la QTR_Create_ICC etc.

In any event, until I (or some other volunteer) gets around to
updating it, the guide is what it is, a gift - however deficient.

Have you chosen a paper on the left hand slider side (Epson Enhanced
Matte, for example) and made sure the "mixture" only uses it and not a
blank one?

You could just set both sides to the same (Epson Enhanced Matte) and
leave the mixture at 50%.

It sounds like your problem is somewhere in there about choosing the
right paper.

You can also print b/w with the same inks you use for color. Just make
sure you choose the right "printer" (R800 with the right inks, upperish
right-hand-side)
