Setup for QT RIP and K6 inks

Setup for QT RIP and K6 inks

2007-02-08 by patmcvicker

We're dedicating an Epson7500 to K6inks using QuadToneRIP.
Instructions on the Piezography website indicate a very straight
forward method for printing ("QuadToneRIP settings on Windows Systems")
using the correct curve for the paper/ink combo. When reading the
QTRIP Users Guide however, there seems to be quite an involved setup
procedure before printing (Characterizing the Ink/Paper Combo,
Determining the Ink Limit, etc). Is the Users Guide more for color
inks? Thanks, Pat

The Users Guide explains the proceedure to create QTR profiles from
scratch or relinerize canned QTR profiles (those supplied with the QTR
installation) specifically for your printer and it's quirks. If you
are happy with the canned profiles as is, then follow the Piezo
website printing instructions.

Be aware that you cannot modify the profiles supplied for the K6
inks. At least as far as I'm aware. Profiles supported by QTR have
either a .qid or a .quad extension. One of these is not editable and
that's how the K6 ink profiles are stored.

The 7500-K6 profiles supplied with the QTR installation ARE editable
because they have .qidf files (look in Profiles folder) that are used
by the Curve Creator for editing and creating the profile curves
stored as .quad files (look in Quad folder). The .quad files are just
long text files that tell the printer for each 0 to 255 step how much
ink to apply for each ink. It's not rocket science. :)

The QTR installation supplies several K6 .quad files for other
printers-these can't be edited in a meaningful way because they have
no corresponding .qidf files.

Jeff,

Thanks for the updated info. Being an owner of a 1280 printer I feel
cheated. Any idea why Cone supplied editable profiles for some
printers and not others?

Re: Setup for QT RIP and K6 inks

Roy can correct me if I'm wrong, but all the profiles supplied with the
QTRip installation are Roy's or from other users. Jon Cone sells
custom profiles (not QTR profiles) for use with his inks as well as
recommending QTRip to the do it your self set.

Roy will need to tells us why there are numerous .quad profiles that
have no associated editable .qidf files in the QTRip installation. Roy?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
