QTR & UT3D

2007-02-11 by fogmarco

I'm using UT3D with an epson 2100.
In the QTR web site I can't find this inkset in the ones supported
from QTR. But in this forum I see that someones are using QTR with
UT3D.
I'm looking for a way to prepare my custom profile with this inkset
and I ask myself if QTR is a good answer.
Is possible to use a differente inkset from the ones that I can fond
in the QTR web site?
How can I start for use QTR and UT3D?

Thank you

Marco

Marco: There are several profiles written for the 2100 and the UT3D
inkset. They are installed when you set up QTR. If you are on a PC,
just select Quad21-UT3D as your printing model (upper right drop down
in the QTRgui window) and the available profiles will be accessable in
the curve set up drop down area.

If your paper has not yet been profiled, you will have to create your
own profiles using the Curve Creator feature and you can
tweak/linearize the existing profile to match the quirks of your
printer. See Tom Moore's guide and the Calibration pdf in the download
area.

Good luck.

Jef,

I checked but I can't find this printing model myself in QTR. I
installed the previous version 6 months ago and just updated to 2.5.
You're sure they come with the installation?

Marco,

I have the same setup. There is not comprehensive guide for this set
(yet). This an area that is still moving pretty fast and not everything
is laid down in formal documents. This is how I dealt with it.

1) read the Tom Moore's user manual (comes with QTR, also available on
the QTR website). Although not perfect it is a pretty good intro into
QTR & curve creation.

2) realize you will need four curves for each paper: warm, cool,
selenium and neutral.

3) start with the warm curve, using's Tom's procecure. Start of or
compare with curves for similar paper/ink sets. Since the UT3D warm
inks are identical to those of the UT7 inks they are a good starting
point. I have uploaded a few early UT3D curves (derived from the UT7
ones) in the file section. Note that these are 1440 dpi curves, while
I'm moving to 2880 dpi (better Dmax and smoothness).

4) create a cool curve, as a modification of the warm curves. The cool
LK and LLK have (nearly) identical densities, so that's a fairly easy.

5) experiment with the QTR blend sliders to mix the cool and warm
curves to obtain a (near) neutral setting.

6) use the mix obtained in 5) to create a neutral curve by setting the
ink limits of the cool and warm LK and LLK inks in the same ratio as
the ratio above. This should give a decent starting point, but refine
this one furhter to your taste/need.

7) create a selenium curve with for the LK the neutral mix obtained
above and for the LLK use the selenium ink. So the selenium toner is
used as just another LLK ink.

Some remarks:

There are many refinements possible to the above. For instance, I'm
still working on the selenium curve since I don't exclude that one
could get some selenium tone in the shadows. But as a starting point it
worked for me.

Although most standard curves are 1440 dpi ones, there seems to be a
growing consensus that 2880 dpi is the better setting in this case,
taking a slower printing speed for granted. In 2880 dpi one does not
need the underprint the black eboni with LK as sometimes is advocated.

Success!

Joost: I checked my QTR directory after installing 2.5.0 QTRip
installation and your UT3D on EEM profiles were there -- HOWEVER, I
*might* have copied them over from the Files section of this Yahoo
Group earlier. I did not try a 100% clean install.

Sorry Marco if this is the case, but you can download the curves Joost
has created.

In addition to Tom Moore's guide, read Roy's excellent Ink Seperations
and Calibration guide also found in the Download area of the QTR web
site.

Thank you Joost and Jeff for the information. I just try to install QTR
and for the 2100-UT7 I can find one curve for EEM (the selenium one). I
don't know only one.
Another question: I see in the file directory of this forum the
complete curves for UT3D and EEM. I think they can be a good start
point for better understanding how have to move into this adventure.
I need only to copy these files (where...) or something more complex?

Thank you

Marco

I assume you make a mistake here, since as far as I know the UT7 inks
do not have a selenium toner. I would expect either a SEPIA curve for
UT7 or a selenium for UT3D.

These are probably the 1440 dpi curves I created some time ago as
modification from the UT7 curves. Please discard the split-tone curves.
With the new split-tone feature of QTR they have become obsolete.

> I need only to copy these files (where...) or something more complex?

1) If you're on windows, copy the file to new directory (for instance
called 2100-UT3D) under:

C:\Program Files\QuadToneRip\profiles\2100-UT3D

2) start up QTR and under "tools" select "curve creations

3) for each curve: open the curve "file"-"open" and press "Create curve"

2) and 3) are neccesary to translate the ASCII .qidf files into
binary .quad files (stored in the "Quad" directory) that are actually
used while printing.

Success,

Joost

Marco:

Copy the .qidf files to QuadToneRIP\2100-ut3d directory (or where ever
the selenium file is stored). You then will have to open each qidf
file in Curve Creator and click Create Curve to generate the
corresponding .quad profile files if you want QTR to print with them.
Note: The curves that show up in Curve Setup drop down are the .quad
files associated with the printing model you chose in the Printer drop
down.

No, any mistake. In my quad2100-ut7 folder I find a curve "UT3D-
EEnhMatte-Selenium".
I had only installed the software so I presume was included with all
the others curves that comes at the first install.
