Creating new QTR profiles for Epson 4000 w/Piezo K7 inks

Creating new QTR profiles for Epson 4000 w/Piezo K7 inks

2007-03-13 by Lotusm50

I would like to create a couple new QTR profiles for use with a Epson
4000 loaded with Piezography K7 inks.

The users guide suggests, "Curves in their editable form are stored as
.qidf files", and "...it's a good idea to select an existing profile
for a similar paper. You load it using the File/Open menu and navigate
to the appropriate subfolder of the Profiles folder mentioned above."

However, looking for the.qidf files for the 4000/K7 combination, I
find that there is only one to be found. Clearly, QTR gives over 25
different profiles for the this printer/ink as I can select them to
print. Why can't I find the .qidf files for them? There are similar
papers to the ones I want to profile and i would use those profiles as
a place to start -- if I could find them. Where do I find them (or
why are they not there), or how do I proceed? Thanks.

Some of us have made "generic" profiles for the K7 inks using
existing K7 .quad file curves. A bit tedious to make the first one,
but once you have a basic profile like the example below (for a 2400
printer), making new profiles for other papers is simply a matter of
adjusting ink limit for the new paper and re-linearizing.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Creating new QTR profiles for Epson 4000 w/Piezo K7 inks

Carl

This would be a useful addition to the files section. Do you mind if I do
that?

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Creating new QTR profiles for Epson 4000 w/Piezo K7 inks

Tom,

If you think it might be useful to others please do put it in the
files section. I extracted the numbers from a file for the 2400
printer so I don't think this can be used for other printers. Note
also that if anyone uses this file they should first delete the
existing linearization data before using the file with new papers. I
actually got the idea form a post by Howard Shaw (see his example
curves here: http://www.howardshaw.org/docs/k7-qtr/k7curves.htm). He
made a similar profile for the 2200 printer. Roy was also looking
into a way of automating the curve extraction from the .quad files,
but I don't know if he has pursued this any further.

Regards,
Carl

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Creating new QTR profiles for Epson 4000 w/Piezo K7 inks

2007-03-13 by Scott Schroeder

I was able to extract data from the quad files to make a qidf file.
Awhile back I uploaded one of the curves into the files section
for the 2200 called k7_test.qidf.
I replicated the HPR curve for the 2200. By using the exact data
I was able to get darn close.
http://home.austin.rr.com/schrochem/Pics/K7_Mycurves.JPG

The bottom one is the one I was able to create.
It wasn't easy either and I never finished that 'project.'
I had setup a MSAccess DB that would count how many
points each shade had that wasn't 0 and then keep the lowest and highest
and then get up to 48 more points that were evenly distributed between
the two. In QTR you can then use the 'load curve' option
and paste the 50 points. Then repeat for the other inks.

I also think it might be a useful tool in tweaking the curves.
You can get the raw data after the normal curve generation
and go back and smooth out areas you want.
I was also hoping to get a feel for how the raw data should
inter-relate with the possibility of maybe working backwards
or as an optimization tool.
BUT I have some ink density, limit concepts to understand first.
