Tonal reversal with some papers

Tonal reversal with some papers

2007-03-14 by john dean

After outputting a 20 step grey scale for making a K6 QTR curve I see
that the paper in question - the new Crane Museo Portfolio Rag -
reverses density in the last step. The final patch reading
significantly lighter than the next to last black patch. This has been
the experience with the previous Museo and Museo Max papers and
confirms others observations of the new one as well. I don't know how
they manage to keep doing this with their coating on an otherwise nice
paper.

I realize I would need to limit the ink in QTR when remaking this
greyscale for measurement.

My question is - does one make a preset for using this ink limit
amount when using this curve on all subsequent prints from this curve
in the future? I would assume so. Just haven't done it yet.

I was having weird problems with the Portfolio Rag also for color
profiling. I tried the canned one from Cranes and it looked awful,
made my own it looked better, now they are making a custom one for
me, we will see how that looks.
