How to measure DMax on prints with a scanner

How to measure DMax on prints with a scanner

2007-04-11 by jcpeos

hey,
I tried to find on the QTR group an answer on this question but ...
(my wife is certainly right when she say "on the sea you aren't able to
find water...")
BTW
thks roy for this QTRip I - atleast- succed to get quite good B&W
prints with
R1800
Lyson R8 inks
Moab Papers

I've post my profiles to the files directory (hope our moderator will
agree on ;-)

I just wonder if it's possible to measure the DMax (no matter if it's
with calculation) with a scanner (mine has a Dmax of 3.8 - Epson
Perfection 4870 Photo - )
my Matt prints got White L#94 to 98 Black L#9 to 14 (depending on paper)
My Glossy ones White L#99 Black L#9

is that possible to calculate the Dmax?
if yes How doing that?

Thks & good prints

Here's a link to a good article by Paul Roark on a related topic that
involves measuring dmax with a scanner.
      http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Making_B-W_ICCs.htm

You don't need to convert the L values you already have to density in
order to create curves using QuadtoneRIP. L works just fine.

If you want to convert L to density you can use Bruce Lindbloom's
Companding Calculator at http://www.brucelindbloom.com/.
Alternatively, if you have multiple values to convert and are familiar
with spreadsheets, you can use the Lightness() and density() functions
in the CurveEval2 spresheet that can be found here:

thanks, thks thks !!!
first my compassion for the 33 death in virginia !!!

regarding Dmax thanks for your help

-I got the density and lightness function & modified the files for my Scanner use - very good to check the values after linearizations and compare to a normal curves - MY SCANNER WORKS are not so bad ;-))

I got Dmax 2.4 with MOAB Glossy and Lyson Photochrome R8 inks
& only Dmax 2 with Moab Matt paper Kayenta with same inks...
Is that good enougth (my prints seems with too "low punchy"... certainly too small contrast ... that's have to be corrected under Photoshop

  all my best
  thks again
