image size accuracy

2007-06-20 by wharfwalker

I have done some further tests printing a specific size through qtr and
found that there is a difference.
When I print a 740mm long print from photoshop it prints 740mm long.
When I print from qtr it is 738mm.
My first tests were with 10x8s and I could not be sure I was seeing any
difference but there definately is at these longer print sizes.
I have everything switched off in qtr, no centering, no fit to page.
Is there anything else I could be doing wrong.

Hi John,

I've read through your posts and I think you've got some different
issues going on.
For below where 740mm prints as 738mm -- this is a very small difference so
I'd tend to think it's a mechanical feed variation. Canvas may feed slightly
differently than paper. For the epson driver I assume you are selecting Canvas
as the media type and possibly the epson driver compensates for it.

In your other post printing through qimage I think you are talking
about a very much
larger variation in size. I think you had a 16mm shorter print than
you expected.
The first question I'd have is whether it's a truncation of the image
-- ie are you
missing the bottom of the image or is it a shrinkage of the image --
i.e. all there
but smaller.

You mentioned looking at the tiff file after formatting in qimage with
a 1mm margin.
Did you just check size or also the image -- ie truncation vs
shrinkage question?
The 7800 by default has a 14mm bottom margin. This is the only thing
I can think
of that maybe has to do with your problem. I'm not very familiar
with qimage so
I don't know how it deals with margins. But if the 14mm bottom margin accounts
for most of the shortness then you may be back as the mechanical feed to
account for the rest of it.
