Brand spankin' newbie... on a Mac

Brand spankin' newbie... on a Mac

2007-07-16 by corvette_bare

Hey there,

I switched from a PC to a Mac in April of this year. I'm slowly
getting up to speed on many of the features in OSX, one of which is
printing. Under Windoze I used Image Print v6 to print to my Epson
2200. Now, I'm going to get an HP Z3100 for color and turn my 2200
into a B&W only printer using neutral K7 inks and QTR.

My questions about this process are these:

Is there a GUI for the MAC? I'm still not very fast at command line
stuff. Is there an absolute beginners guide for dummies like me that
can explain in (understandable) detail as to how to setup and
configure QTR so I can get quality prints from my gear? I have a 15"
Mac Book Pro that I bought as loaded as I can, so it can serve as a
desktop while in my office, and also work well on location. I have a
23" Apple Cinema Display that is managed with ColorEyes Display Pro
using a DTP94. I tried to start with the best I could afford so I can
be reasonably sure my gear is not holding back quality.

Now the hardest part is how to set up workflows to use this stuff to
good advantage. I ported my Image Print to my Mac but the more I read
about QTR, the more hooked I became on the concepts of how it
operates. All I need now is some help getting started. I have read the
PDF's and gained what understanding I can. I'm looking for some
reiteration or restatement of these things that can help bring it all
home for me. I'm one of those that learns better by repetitively doing
something than from just reading about it. There's probably a name for
this condition, but my son calls it "O.L.D." disease. Ah teenagers...

While I envy your equipment list I've a question. From the things I've read,
the sample prints I've seen, the Z3100 should make you stunning B&W prints
without hassling inks! I've an Epson 4800 Pro and a G5 Mac and I love the
B&W I get from it but I've usually got to change Photo to Matte Black inks.
You get 4 black inks AND a spectrophotometer using Gretag Macbeth iOne
technology to create your own paper profiles on the spot!

So the get to the question,WHY BOTHER with an old 2200 and
QTR???????????????

Enjoy your Z3100.....

Alan

Hey Alan,

I guess there's just enough Scottish ancestry left in me to make me
"frugal not cheap". I paid for the 2200; I'm going to use the 2200.
I'm old fashioned and don't really believe in the 'toss it cause the
new one's out' philosophy. And I don't mean this response in a
mean-spirited way... it's just who I am.

Piezography Neutral K7 inks arrived yesterday.

I guess I'll have to give this RIP printing a shot with what I've
picked up from the documentation so far.

Does anyone know if the printer settings shown for CS2 on a Mac will
also work with CS3? Thanks.

I can certainly appreciate your approach to using, not throwing away,
perfectly good equipment:)
I have such a cramped office/editing space that I share with my wife
(and a full sized elliptical trainer) that I'm forced to go minimalist:(

I recently reformatted my G5 to add and swap around another hard
drive so I haven't re-installed QTR. At the same time I picked up the
Epson 4800 and the results I'm getting with ABW are very good! I
haven't tried portraits yet, I've a sample print from an HP Z2100
hanging on the wall right behind my monitors that is my "gold
standard" when I do get around to portraits :)

Best of luck with your printing! Alan

Thank you VERY much for the good wishes Alan! I'm partial to taking
black and white Infrared pictures with an old Nikon 5400 I bought on
ebay and for which I then bought an IR filter from www.lifepixel.com.
Using the online tutorials at Lifepixel, I took the 5400 apart and
replaced the IR-cut filter with the IR filter. Now, I can use the
5400's focusing and light meter as normal, (no focus first, then put a
filter in front of the lens.) It's these B&W shots that I want to have
a perfectly neutral (or as close as possible,) tonality on.

I assume there is no posting of images in the threads here, but I hope
to have my web site back up shortly if anyone is interested in seeing
some of my offerings. All I need is about another 10 hrs in a day and
I should be fine!
