Newbie R800 Question - Ink rubs right off!

Newbie R800 Question - Ink rubs right off!

2007-12-11 by dropthattrout

Hello,

I've just started using QTR, and so far have been impressed with the
output. I think I have more work to do to get the prints I want, but
first I need to fix my biggest issue. The ink on my paper never dries
fully. It rubs right off!

I am using inksupply.com (MIS) inks, and have tried Epson Premium
Lustre (which is really nice but messy when the ink rubs off), and
Epson Premium Matte, which dries a little better, but still comes off
on your fingers if you touch the print. I've started using a local
brand, here in Toronto, called CCBC Premium Lustre, which is great,
but has the same ink problem.

I am wondering if this is happening because the R800 isn't printing
with the Gloss Optimizer? How can I keep the ink on the page??

BTW, I am using 2.5.2.0 and using the QuadR800 profile.

Is anybody else using the same setup, and not having the same problem?
Is this an issue to do with a curve that I should be using?

Thank you to anyone who can shed some light on this issue for me. I
greatly appreciate it!

Cheers,
Adam

It's definitely an ink paper compatibility problem. I have an R800 and was having the same
problem with Ilford Smooth Pearl paper and Epson ultrachrome standard inks. I switched to
matte paper (just for BW output via Quadtone RIP) and all was fixed.

You must find out what specification of paper your ink manufacturer recommends.

good luck

Hi David,

Sorry for the late response, I appreciate your feedback!

I am using the QuadR800 printer model. When I go into the curve creation tool, it shows Matt Black (MK) density 100. Also, it shows Gloss is not used. Should I be entering a density number there?

Should I create a new curve that has a MK density of 0, and a PK (grey ink) density of 100? Will it help to add a gloss optimizer density?

I am using the http://www.inksupply.com/r800ink_org.cfm inkset.

Thanks again,
Adam

Which MIS inkset are you using? Are you sure that you are using PK ink

rather than MK (Eboni) ink on the Lustre papers?

Hey, I tried changing the ink from MK to PK 100 and now I can print on Lustre paper! Looks good, but I also like the look of the MK on Matte, but the ink also tend to come off a little with that. Will using the Gloss Optimizer help? Should I try the curve for it at 100 density, or is there a better configuration?

Thanks again,
Adam
