R-1800 Red Blinking Lights

R-1800 Red Blinking Lights

2008-09-08 by Michael

Hi - The Epson R-1800 paper button and ink button blink red
alternately. The green light on the on/off button does not come on.
The printer stopped working. I get a message from the epson print
program (Status Monitor 3) that says, "Parts inside your printer are
at the end of their service life." It is less than a year and a half
old. I am using K7 inks in a Niagra CIS system. These inks plug up
way more than Epson inks do, so you end up doing a lot more head
cleaning. I was once told that the printer has some kind of a
counter, and after so many head cleans the printer assumes you have a
full ink waste pad and shuts down.

Is anyone familiar with this? And if there is truth to this, is
there a formula or code that will fix the problem? I have been
cleaning the ink waste pad regularly. Since I use the machine
regularly, I would prefer not sending the machine away. Time and
money, you know!

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated....

Thanks - Michael G

P.S. I live in Florida, we are calling the next hurricane Epson...

Download the SSC utility here: http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml. One can use this program to reset the counter.

Its no myth and the Epson help line conveiniently forget to tell you about it. I see from another post that you have the link to the web site to reset the counter.
What you must not forget to do is to replace or rinse with plain water and replace the ink waste pads before you get ink leaking over the top. If you are unhappy about dismantling the printer to do this then do what most do and fit a small bottle to the pipes which feed the waste pad . This way you can empty this periodically and not worry about the ink pads anymore. I forget the exact location but there are many "how to do it " diagrams if you Google it.

The utility does indeed reset the printer, however the root cause of the problem hasn't been solved. Most inkjet printers dump their ink into absorbent pads (usually located under the chasis) and as a result if you just reset the printer without replacing the pads, eventually they will become supersaturated and bleed ink all over the inside of the printer and probably your desk.

You can solve this problem with about 20 minutes of work. You need to install an ink overflow resevoir in your printer. In the R1800's case you just need two vinyl tubes (about 12" long) an old ink bottle and a screw driver and just follow these steps:

This is a video showing how to install a waste ink tank.

I didn't buy mine, I built it out of tubing and a old plastic bottle I
had laying around (was nothing but a big vitamin stores bottle)
