Epson 1400 pizza wheel marks

Epson 1400 pizza wheel marks

2008-09-25 by pixelphoto2005

Last evening I was doing some test prints with QTR and I thought I detected a dotted line
across one of the prints. Well I detected same with a magnifying glass. The first thought that
came to me was "pizza wheel" marks. Has any one else experienced this problem. I know
some of the older Epson printers did this and MIS had a tutorial to correct it. Just checked MIS
but found nothing. Any suggestions. I've already got a CIS installed so I'm not concerned with
mods if necessary.

I don't know if MIS has any accessories that deal with pizza wheel marks on
a 1400. The exit rollers are so important to the 1400 that I'm not sure
disabling them would be a good idea. Finding a paper that doesn't show the
marks might be easier.

I'm not familiar with the mechanics of the 1400, but to the extent
that the exit rollers are like 2200's, this may help:

Add 1" (or whatever approximates the height of the paper when it
leaves the exit rollers) to the exit platform. I do this simply by
laying a photo paper box on the reception tray.

The problem has to do with the way the paper bends on exiting...reduce
or eliminate the last bend and you may eliminate the flaws.

I struggled with pizza and other marks on some of the pseudo-silver
semi-gloss and gloss papers, was told by the marketing director of one
of the best manufacturers that this was inevitable with 2200 and even
2400...but I instantly eliminated the problem with that simple fix.
Unfortunately, that fix won't eliminate 2200's B&W bronzing :-(

I've been able to eliminate the pizza wheel tracks by sticking a
sheet of fairly heavy paper in the 2200 through the rear feed slot
with the paper clamp (or whatever it is called) set loose and pulling
the paper quickly back and forth while blasting the offending wheel
with compressed air from a can. Maybe the air blows out the dirt or
there may be some lubricant mixed in with it. So far it has worked.
When it doesn't I'll probably get a new machine.

Hahnemeule Photo Rag is famous (may be urban legend about one of my
favorite papers, but I tend to believe it) for leaving something on
rollers... the treated sheets from common Office Depot/Staples printer
cleaning kits seem to deal with this, as they also do with ink
buildups on print heads...

Wouldn't it be great if cheap, common, office supply store printer
cleaning supplies did what the claim ? I suspect they can.
