Oh where to begin

Oh where to begin

2009-07-01 by Bob McCarthy

I just acquired an Epson 7600 that i'm going to dedicate to B&W. I've have many, many question that I'm hoping the group can point me towards answers

I'm shooting large format, typically 4x5 and 8x10 and have been scanning with a Cezanne. The files are beautifully toned and sharp as only large format can be. To get out of the darkroom, I bought a HP9180 thinking it was a training step to the Z3100.

I'm on a Mac desktop with the latest OS and use CS3 at the moment. I can create very nice prints with the current setup, but they are not quite to the level of what I used to produce in a darkroom. I elected to close down wet printing and sold off (actually gave away) my darkroom equipment.

I'm printing on the Baryta papers at the moment, enjoying the slight warmth of Galleria Silk.

A friend called me yesterday and offered my, for a song, their Epson 7600, which they used very sparingly and I brought it home last night. Head cleaning devoured most of last evening, but otherwise the machine looks virtually new.

I downloaded QTR to look at it, but without inks all I could do it look.

So where do I start, what inks to buy, the Cone setup or are there others. papers, profiles are all questions that come to mind.

I would appreciate and help or suggestion as how to come up to speed quickly.

When you say the "7600 AND LATEST MAC OS AND EPSON DRIVER NOT AN OPTION"
are you referring to the issues around printing with K7 on gloss media? If
so, Cone's K7 Selenium set is built for gloss. However, it either needs to
be sprayed or over coated with a gloss optimizer to eliminate bronzing &
gloss differential. You can actually print with any of the K7 inks in this
manner, but until you "fixed" the inks with the spray or overcoat they will
smudge if touched.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Oh where to begin

2009-07-02 by Howard Shaw

Hi Bob

I print on matt papers such as Hahnemuhle Photo Rag rather than the
newer baryta papers but in my 7600 I have the following MIS inks:

Eboni Black
UT7-C - dark carbon
UT7-LC - mid carbon
UT-FS-Y - light carbon
R2NTL-C - dark "neutral"
R2NTL-Y - mid "neutral"
UT7-Y - Sepia toner

When controlled by QTR this gives me the choice of two quadtone sets a
warm and a neutral (sharing the light UTFS-Y ink). The last position is
a sepia ink for toning if I want that. If you prefer selenium you could
try MIS's Selenium toner ink from their UT3D set. If you like both
toners you could drop the light carbon ink UT-FS-Y and have both toners
in there at the loss of a little smoothness in the light tones.

This set up gives me very smooth prints in a variety of tones from cool
neutral to warm (and any mix between the two including split toned).with
the option of sepia toning. If you like a very blue cool you could go
for MIS's complete UT7 set (but replace the UT7-LK ink with another of
your choice).

Alternatively you could try one of the Cone K7 sets - you won't get a
choice of tones (other than by changing papers) but they should be very
smooth (in theory at least, I haven't tried them).

I would recommend considering matt papers as the 7600 is slightly older
technology and is perhaps not optimised for the newer style glossy &
baryta papers although these inks should print fine on the matt baryta
papers at least. I've also printed on Silver Rag with these inks but
using a different 'photo' black (R2PKN-PK) and that also worked well.

best of luck
Howard

haha,

if your referring to error 9672, I discovered it two days ago and still don't have the Epson driver working.

Shocking that Epson dropped all software development for a 5 year old printer.

I'm having to use the gimp variant.

Re: Oh where to begin

2009-07-02 by Bob McCarthy

What I was hoping to find is an ink set that doesn't bronze on baryta papers. That is the only weakness in the HP setup I've been toying with. Metamerism appears to be an issue of the past.

I don't know the lingo yet. I've been reading the Cone web site (piezography?)

Are there others?

I really like the look of the new papers, so this printer is not capable of working with them is your belief?

Does a GLOP cart come with any of the sets?

Thanks. really appreciate the help.

Re: Oh where to begin

2009-07-02 by Bob McCarthy

I discovered Mr. Roarks site, my head is swimming. While he goes into great detail, he raises as many questions as he answers.

I'm starting to think, selling the 7600 and buying a HP Z3200 is the simplest solution, though a very expensive one, as the inks are a bit pricier as is the hardware.

7600 issues

Print driver issues with 7600

I worry about the cautions about settling of the pigments as I don't print daily.

My greatest complaint at the moment is bronzing with my current rig, does that go away with MIS or Peizo??

I really like the look of Harmon Baryta and Galleria Gold Silk, The Gold Silk has a nice touch of warmth that I find attractive.

I'm willing to place the ink order but for which system.

Is there a FAQ about?

Re: Oh where to begin

2009-07-02 by shileshjani

Bob,

If I were given well-functioning 7600, I would definitely keep it for Gloss & Matte B/w printing. Here is what I would do.

Get funnell fill carts. I bought mine from inkjetcarts.us, and they work very well on my 4000.

I would use MIS K4 (or apparently the same cheaper from injetcarts.us). This is how the inks would be set-up.

K = MK
C = PK
M = GLOP
LC = LC
LM = LM
y = LLK
LK = LK

Using QTR, you can make glossy (Dmax > 2.5 with GLOP overcoat) and matte prints with this set-up. It would give you print ranges from warm (but not sepia), neutral, selenium, to cool. And, you can split-tone quite a complex set of tones. This is essentially what I have done with my 4000. Except that I have 8 channels (separate PK and MK), so I have the luxury of an additional ink. I chose the 1800 printer equivalent blue ink to selectively tone the dark end of my prints.

Since you are not using any premixed neutral inks, ink settling and attended tone shifts should not be an issue. But you will need to quickly come to terms with using QTR. Having a densitometer would help a lot, but you can get by with a scanner for linearization.

Please let me know if I can help you.

Shilesh

Thank you, made some baby steps with the RIP. darn sight better than the Epson driver, WOW.

Is there a curve/profile DB out there somewhere?

At least it provides an initial crutch.

I have a roll of 17" Epson Ultrasmooth in the supply closet.

It will be my first test,

How does a curve and icc profile relate to each other?

And, you can split-tone quite a complex set of tones. This is essentially what I have done with my 4000. Except that I have 8 channels (separate PK and MK), so I have the luxury of an additional ink. I chose the 1800 printer equivalent blue ink to selectively tone the dark end of my prints.

Bob,

Take it one step at a time.

First what inks do have loaded in the printer currently? If OEM, is the black ink PK or MK? There are some good of preloaded QTR curves for Ultra Smooth paper. But you will need MK ink loaded in the printer. Play with them a while, and get a feel for how QTR works.

Do you have a means of measuring density?

Standard UC inkset is installed. I have photo black installed and no matte cartridge.

I did one 13x19 on Galleria Silk gold with a semigloss curve. I was holding off on the Ultrasmooth until I get a matte cart black in the printer.

I have some small sheets of Photo Rag, for grins I did a print with both tyhe Epson gimp driver and with QTR. QTR sure improved the black over the standard driver, but not as good as the little HP does which have a magnificent black.

It did surprisingly better than I expected, Max black was pretty good.

Only with a scanner.
