ChartThrob & Scanner to Linearize

Is anyone else using ChartThrob and a flatbed scanner to Linearize the ink curve?

I did use a print on a standard multifunctional Konica Minolta and scanned
it on the same machine (simple standard A4 copypaper) and the print I made
afterwards had better tonality. I tried the same at home on a good R1800 and
the result is not so good.

Terry,

I have not used ChartThrob on digital negatives or prints as yet. I have
loaded it into CS4 and it certainly appears to accomplish what it has set
out to do.

I have created the greyscale chart and then distorted with various curves
adjustment layers and then I have run the script and it creates a new curve
that does a great job of linearizing the chart. The next set is to try it
on my printer.

It is my intention to use it to linearize greyscale prints not negatives.

The R1800 does not have ABW mode like the 2400, 3800, etc. I assume you printed out the 101 Step ChartThrob on the R1800...were you using the Epson Print Drivers or Quadtone Rip (QTR)?

I tried it but it didn't work. I got this error message:

Error 8800: General Photoshop error occurred. - The command "<unknown>" is not currently available. Line: 893 -> doc.activeLayer.applyAverage();

I'm using CS2, on Windows XP.

I can generate the test image OK, but I get the error message when I hit <analyze>.

Assume you have ChartThrob v1.07? Also, check the version of PS it works with...I'm remembering it may be for CS3 & CS4????

I believe it wants an RGB file to analyze and not greyscale...assume you've checked that?

Re: ChartThrob & Scanner to Linearize

2009-12-06 by mccarvill

Looks like XP was the issue. I got it to work on my Vista laptop and the same CS2.

I'm using a 1400, UT-14, and Paul's curves on Premier Imaging matte paper and, so far, I'm impressed with ChartThrob's results.
