QTR Printing in color from a B/W photo ?

QTR Printing in color from a B/W photo ?

2011-02-05 by charlesblume@ymail.com

Downloaded your software the other night and just got a chance to play
with it. Read a lot of good things and want to try and improve my B/W printing.
I would attach screen shots of my settings, but can't figure out how ? Prints come out with very vivid colors instead of B/W ? Photo is greyscale.

I haven't payed for the program yet as i'm not very experienced and if it's more than I can master, I'll delete the program.

My equipment; Powermac 867, Epson Stylus Photo 2200, MOAB Somerset
Enhanced paper

Thanks for any help,

Charlie Blume

Sounds like you've used a curve set for monochrome inks while using the
standard colour inks for the printer.
What were your QTR settings when you made the print?

Mike , thanks for the reply. If i understand what your asking, I had the mode set to "Quad Tone RIP" and each of the three Curves set to 'UT-PK neutral' without "Blending" checked .

'UT' probably stands for UltraTone and is an inkset available from MIS
(I think). All the inks in the set are black, grey, or lightly toned.
Since you got vivid colours, I guess you are using the standard inks for
your printer. Also, PK stands for Photo Black which is for glossy paper
- I think Moab Somerset Velvet is a matt paper (We don't have the Moab
range here, so I'm guessing its similar to the 'Somerset Velvet' paper I
can get here) - if it is, you should be using one of the MK curve sets

Looking at the list of curve files that are in the QTR distribution file
for the 2200, I'd suggest trying the UC-EEnhMatte curves or one of the
other UCmk- curves to see how they work out.

Charlie,

Looks like you installed the wrong set of profiles (curves). Try uninstalling and then reinstall the from the folder "2100-2200-UC".

As Mike noted, curves with PK in the name use Photo Black, while those with MK use Matte Black. The installation for the 2200-UC includes ready-made curves for Epson Enhanced Matte (EEnhMatte) and Moab Entrada (MEntradaNatural), among others, so start with one of those.

You don't need to use more than one curve unless you want to blend different curves, so start with just one. Be sure to set up all the settings properly and then save them as a pre-set so you don't have to redo them all each time you make a print.

Also, read Amadou Diallo's QTR workflow tutorial, if you haven't already.

Cheers,
Keith

Mike, That was the problem and all is well. i had used the PK setting as
i don't have a matte black cartridge at present. Loaded the UC curves and
that was it. Will order matte black now. Three photos printed just now
and all came out very neutral, which is what I'm after for now.

thanks again, Charlie
