Optimal ppi ?

Optimal ppi ?

2011-02-05 by Louis de Stoutz

Is it still valid, that QTR resamples everything to 720ppi, as Roy
stated once (in 2008)? From there, QTR will dither to whatever dpi one
has chosen, right?

If so, then 720ppi is the print resolution I should aim for when doing
the output-sharpening, and also the one I should give QTR if I want to
control any resampling of my image.

(Sorry to ask or state what might be evident for some of you, but I
found that this important information was not as easy to find as I
expected it to be... :-)

Hi Louis,

The answer is that it's the same as always -- images are upsampled to 720ppi
before dithering. But in general I don't think its something you need to worry
about. I might use 720ppi test images for specific testing but for ordinary
printing I just use whatever I have. It's nice to have at least
360ppi for sharp
images but if its 311, 435, 597 or whatever I just use that.

Thanks for the answer, Roy. I agree with you in that it doesn't matter
too much for "ordinary" printing.

But for those who follow a multi-pass sharpening work-flow, this
information helps optimize the output-sharpening.
