9900 QTR Compatibility???

9900 QTR Compatibility???

2011-04-21 by photog0946

Hello All,

Sorry to be arriving at the party late, but I've been addressing some 9900 issues and haven't been checking in recently. For many years I've been using QTR with the 7600MK printer and wishing it were compatible with the PK as well. I just came across a very interesting post on the LuLa forum and decided to do some research here. So far I have learned that it may indeed be possible to use QTR with the X900 series printers, which of course is great news. However, if I am reading this correctly it would seem that it might also be possible to use it with the PK ink and Premium Luster as well. Of course there's always the possibility that I have misinterpreted this information, so if that is the case please correct me.

I'll be watching with great anticipation!

Thanks, Gary

I've just started using QTR with the 7900. It seem to work with whichever ink you have selected on the printer (pk or mk). I haven't seen any profiles for the premium luster papers.

there has been some positive movement, but I'll let Roy give out info when it's reliable and verifiable. I had to drop out when it reached the point of writing descriptors or profiles from scratch, which one can then edit.
I know it's not that daunting, but I'm a novice in that area and have too many other present commitments to take the time out to learn it from scratch and get it squared away. It's very close though... I think it's worth reporting that it will happen.

Has anyone figured out how to drive the green and orange inks? Txs Mike

Yes, I've managed to get all 10 inks controlled. I've got some more
tuning stuff to do before making a new release.

that's the combination I used for testing, the sRGB workaround was necessary to print the sep page correctly, but it's RGB so normal file grayscale workflow may be different.

YES! Very good news. One question though, will it be backward compatible with OS10.5.8?. Also, will there be profiles for Premium Luster? Woops, that's two questions, sorry. But on the Luster profile issue, I would definitely be willing to buy them if they become available.

I really have no idea. Roy could address the OS issue, but profile availability for different papers depends on the user base available to help with their creation. They are free with the shareware app.
I'm sure Roy has a fair amount left to do for a viable release, and he does all that for next to nothing, so patience may be required for a bit still...

Re: 9900 QTR Compatibility???

Thanks Tyler,

In no way am I trying to put any pressure on Roy to finish this project. I am well aware of the amount of time and effort he has dedicated to QTR and also very appreciative of that and the results. The software is definitely worth more than the cost and I for one would be happy to pay more. I guess the point I was trying to put forward is that I would also be prepared to pay for PK profiles as well, should anyone care to create them.

Re: 9900 QTR Compatibility???

Thanks for the comment, Tyler. It does sound encouraging.

On the sRGB workaround, I recently became aware of an interesting write-up by Mark Dubovoy (http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/solving.shtml) in which he discusses the problem with profiling with Snow Leopard and the Epson 9900 printer (although no mention of QTR use). He suggests that the both the Assign Profile in Photoshop and the Printer Profile should be identical. He used Adobe RGB in his workaround, but believes that it should work equally well if both are set to Pro Photo RGB, and I assume setting both to sRGB would be included as well. This is similar to Roy Harrington's earlier suggestion about using the sRGB workaround, but suggests that other color spaces may work as well. I haven't had a chance to play with that idea yet, but would welcome any comments if you or other member of the newsgroup have experience with this in CS5/Mac OS and the Epson 7900/9900 printers and.

There are conflicting reports on which colour space does the trick.

But why not use Adobe's new utility for the target printing:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/834/cpsid_83497.html

BTW, there is still a request/question by Andrew Darlow on QTR support
for the 11880, no hint what he could try to print only the black channel
(one of the two) ?

my goal was to correctly print Roy's file. sRGB did it, I moved on. Solving this larger ridiculous dilemma that's been absurdly going on for years now while the major players and gurus argue... not on my list <G>. I don't use RGB drivers or profile through them any more, I don't need the utility.
For those doing a lot of QTR work and thusly printing the sep files, it's worth a try.

Custom Pper Sizes

2011-04-26 by Alan Vlach

Can I create a custom paper size? I'm printing on a 3800 and the option doesn't appear. I need a 11x17 size.

Thanks

Hi Alan,

It's the same as any other driver. With CS5 you go to Print Settings
(button in
the middle of the Preview page). That brings you to Print dialogs that have
paper size pulldown in the middle of page. Under that is Manage Custom Sizes...
11x17 is already there -- its also called Tabloid.
