Newbie Question about QTR

Newbie Question about QTR

2011-05-19 by silverhound905

Hi folks, I've only recently started printing black and white using QTR and I'm confused about how to use the Curve Setup feature. My printer is an Epson 3800 and I mostly use Epson VFA paper. The curve setup feature gives me 3 curve options. Why 3? Let's say I choose UCmk -Evelvetfineart warm for the Curve 1, why and when would I use the Curve 2 and/or Curve 3? I told you I was a newbie. If anyone can explain this to me it would be appreciated.

Generally the curves for each paper come in a number of flavors - (1) warm, (2) neutral, (3) sepia, and (4) cool. Say you print with the warm curve, but find it too warm. Then you try neutral, and find it too much in the opposite direction. You now have the option of finding something in the middle. You could cho0se 50% warm and 50% neutral. In that case you would be using 2 curves.

You can even split the various curves. For instance you can use 100% warm for the shadows, 50/50 warm/neutral for mid tones, and 100% neutral for highlights.

So you can create many looks using up to 3 curves in this manner. Really is a very versatile tool. Try it out.

Best wishes.
