Someone like Tomita might have alternated notes via overdubs to use a mono instrument. Then again Tomita tried using 36 100m VCOs for some string sounds on "Grand Canyon Suite", And then again Tomita just samples his moogs these days as far as I've heard and didn't keep using the 18 modules for string sounds.
