Hi there,

First a little info. I'm new to MIDI. I'm undergoing the total conversion my
studio from a digital computer based setup to a MIDI, analog, hardware based
setup. So I have a couple questions. 
 
I have a Jupiter-6 that I want to use in my MIDI setup but I'm a little
confused as to how to assign it's MIDI receive channel. It seems to always
recieve in omni mode. Do I need to get a MIDI patchbay of some kind or is
there a way to ssign the MIDI channel on the jp-6? Are there ones that willl
work with a hardware sequencer like the q80 (I know there are many for the
mac)? 

Jupiter-6 users out there, what do you use?

Hi Bradford.

Unfortunately, the MIDI implementation in the JP-6 is very
rudimentary.  It was one of Roland's first (if not the first)
analogues to have it.

Having said that, there is an easy work-around for getting the synth
out of Omni.

If you are using a computer-based sequencer simply program into midi
channel one controller number 124 (Omni Off) and 127 (Poly On).  If
you're using a hardware-based sequencer, this may be a little more
tricky to do.

There's a new firmware being developed by a couple of folks from AH.
It's an ongoing project, hopping to add several features to the MIDI
spec of the Jupiter-6, along with some other enhancements.  Check it
out at www.synthcom.com.

The Jupiter-6 is still one of my favorite analogue polysynths.  The
multi-mode filter and cross mod are amazing.

there is also a little hardware trick
before to power on the synth connect the  midi out to midi in
and after the synth is on it's set on midi ch.1 and omni off,
I must say that from my personal point of view Jp6 is not a so good sounding
synth
totally an other story respect JP8,it has very thin sounding
oscillator/filter,very limited in sound
effects,I have temporarily exchanged it with a prophet 600 of a friend  that
I greatly prefer,it's warmer
 with a superior character and a very good unison mode too

If you plug the midi out to the midi in of the JP-6 and turn it on this
disables omni mode, with the lower half of the split receiving channel 2
and the upper half recieving channel 1. (Yes! it's bi-timbral..  now if
only those europa boys would make a hack that allows each channel it's own
output)

Oh, you cannot change the receive channel numbers, as far as I know,
unless you have something like one of those Anatek pocketfilter boxes.

This as already been written about, but here's a tip.

In you software sequencer (if you use one), in your
default, blank sequences embed in channel one an omni
off and poly on signal.  These are control change
numbers 124 and 127.

Before recording your sequence, press play and feed
these messages into the jp6.

I have one of the earlier jp6's, which is
midi-dysfunctional but can be cooperative given the
right circumstances.

This wouldn't be too hard.  The JP6 uses two MKS80rev4 voice boards.
One is fully populated and the other is half populated.  Hence
the 2+4 and 4+2 split options.  You may be able to directly tap
off of these, or it might require an opamp as a current to voltage
converter.  I haven't really looked at the schematics so I'd have
to crack open my JP6 to give you a definitive answer.  And if
you didn't want to drill holes in the rear of the JP6, you could
rewire the XLR as a lower/upper out.

Actually I have a mod that illustrates this.  I haven't tried this
yet, but it looks fairly simply to do.  There's a few extra parts
involved, you can't just wire up the voice board to the XLR out.  If
anyone wants it, I can dig around and get it to you.
