Re: Re-revised panels posted..

2004-09-27 by Scott E.

Hi Steve,

Since everyone went off on the jpg/photoshop thread, it seems that any
comments about your configuration have been bypassed. At least, I
believe that you wished for comments since you posted your design to the
forum. I know that this can be a consuming task, particularly with the
Serge system being "set in stone" once the panel is ordered. Please keep
in mind that my comments are not criticism, but an attempt to help in
your endeavor to be pleased with your system once you have the funds to
get one.

First, it is my opinion, that unless one is doing nothing but signal
processing, a TKB is a must and I am glad to see that you added one.
Having said that, I think the system is over "programmed" with
sequencers for the resources. Cut one. You need more oscillators and
manual mixers, IMO. There is too much in the way of control voltage
modules and not enough in the way of sound generation. There is a DUSG,
two DTGs and a Clock. I would replace a DTG or CLOCK with a PCO. Omit
one of the ACPRs and replace with a MIXER. The NCOM looks out of place
at the top right, and would be very useful in the left set of panels.
Perhaps swap it out with ring modulator. I would also place the scaling
buffer nearer to the oscillators.

You should really consider adding a FRS. Expensive, but way cool. Be
sure to put the C/M in the blank space next to it, or the panel space is
wasted. I also think this system is too small for the quad output panel,
but it *is* the only way to get quad panning.

I hope this is some good food for thought for you. Keep in mind that
this is *ONLY* my *OPINION* and your design should fit you style of
synthesis and what you plan for the system. And, FWIW, buy the synth as
soon as you can afford it. Time passes and missed opportunities to
compose are never recaptured.

As far as the router is concerned, I heard that switching audio signals
through the router was unsatisfactory as the audio would "click" and
disturb the sound, not because the module was defective, but depending
no where the waveform would pick up where the other one cut off or where
the waveform began in its cycle. Same thing with control voltages.

BTW, where is the Buchla 100 you got to play with? I cut my teeth on two
of them in the early '70s learning synthesis.

Regards, Scott
