Re: My modular plan so far (was Changing Studios)

2005-08-07 by mimulon

Hi John,

Yes. I must refine and approach zen panel layout.

I stuck the CM in panel 1, cuz I wanted it, and I didn't have a place in one of the others,
but then I noticed I had it already. It makes no sense, I agree. Same for RS.

I agree I need more mixers and and certainly more ADSR.

I agree shop panels are well thought out, and have good resale value. I have to write some
kind of 'equivalency' program (like a module planner) to help me plan. Something that lets
me know 'if I get 1 animal, it gives me what %age of the modules I wanted, and what other
modules?'

A lot of this is just intellectual masturbation, as I haven't had hands-on serge time yet. A
guy in toronto (city next to me) has offered to let me come up this month, so I'll be doing
that in a week or so. That will give me infinitely more hands-on awareness of module
capability and patch feel, and clear up some of the mistakes i've made due to lack of
experience.

I like your other ideas and post a revised one up soon. This is fun :)

I spent quite a lot of time analyzing your for sale panel list. Since I'm not old hand with the
acronyms, I had to map everything out and put it in long forms, read up on the modules,
build little panel pictures (I was surprised that a lot of module graphics are not available
on serge-fans.com! -- e.g. cvi, str, xfad, vcf2, vcfqx). I wanted some sort of picture which
helps my visual processes work. Like, to your 'mixer' comment, I see your Panel 1 would
fit in well. Only thing is I was hoping to buy a panel that would let me start having fun
right away (again, I have to write the next-gen serge module planner program -- kind of
where you set a goal and it finds various ways to get you there with shop panels, used
panels, and misc). Sort of a decision tree planner.

Regards,

Paul

nothing about modulars, and haveing learned the hard way about panel functionality, my
first and second reaction is that you should seriously go back to the drawing boards and
reconsider your panel layouts. There are several modules in each of your Serge layouts
that are completely misplaced while others would be served best by placing them
elsewhere. You have also duplicated some modules un-neccessarily. Just one example is
your placement of the CM (control module) CM, while it can be a stand alone, always goes
next to a FS because of the internal build layout of that module. So, the way you have
things laid out now, your going to wind up with two of them which is totaly redundant.
You have also almost completely ignored adequate mixing facilities which, considering the
number of audio sources in your layout, will be almost fatal to your system right from the
go.
