I REALLY agree with the idea of adding Banana stuff if you can and can
afford it. the Cyndustires stuff is incredible and all salt and pepper
stuff: weird filters, odd gate and dividers, burst generators,
freakish highly useful items like the Randivide, etc. I would only
caution what one person said about the excellent customer service.
That is very true but right now orders have been delayed quite a bit.
If you can find items used in top shape that is a no brainer IMO but
if you want to order even basic modules you may wait quite some time.
I think it's safe to say Modcan is not abandoning the banana system
but again that is a few month turn around for most pieces. Still cyn
and modcan woudl make EXCELLENT playing partners for another banana
system (especially the Zero Osc).
Another correction I'd make is the comment that the Fenix is
"overpriced". That is absurd (IMO) coming from a Serge board where
people gladly (and I agree rightly so) pay $3-4K for a single panel.
The Fenix is unique and not just self contained but FULL of intriguing
modules: Three VCOS, Three LFOs, Three filters - each one different
plus analog/digital noise source, slew, s/h, mixers, three MORE
bizarre envelopes and vcas, built in 1/8" jack abilites, and about a
dozen other esoteric and practical pieces. Practically speaking you
cannot buy anything banana half as full of modules for that price.
Plus it is handmade and ultra rare in painfully limited numbers to add
the whole KKKollector swing to things. Certainly that is worth
$5000-8000 in this market and it will be more in years to come. They
do sell at that and rightly so.
So I'd say defintely look at Banana stuff. If you are set on 1/8"
there is plenty but I lean towards the Frac not Euro stuff (although
both will obviously play nice with each other). Blacet, Metalbox,
Wiard, and now MOTM have some left of center designs that I think any
Serge user could wrap around. IMO the frac units (and jacks in
particular) are just more solid and well laid out. I do LOVE doepfer
stuff but I have to admit it gets very crowded very quickly even in a
small but complex patch. And I dislike those *#$ plastic jacks.
That said look at the features of the things and jump accordingly. You
can always intergrate anything into your serge system adnthere is such
a wide range of things these days I'd say start your own frankensynth
and see where it leads you :)
