Lure Of the Serge?

Lure Of the Serge?

2004-09-16 by hal3001

Hey, I'm a soon to be serge owner, and I'm just curious, what is the
lure you find about the serge modular units? The quality of sound?
the variety of modules? Is it simply the fact that they were the
only game in town for a while? I'm really excited to get one of
these. Sorry about this being crossposted with AH, but i thought i
might get some more answers here as well! btw thanks for those who
replied on Ah too:-D

damn if I know, I just keep trippin' over it on the way to the barn....

but seriously, Serge's, esp the modern ones, are rugged, reliable, and
extremely accurate, flexible and wide-ranged. The designs have been
updated several times in 30+ years.

Was Serge EVER the only game in town?
I also find it odd that you are about to drop large wads of cash on a Serge
system but don't know what the appeal is.

Yeah... in the 80's - early 90's, when every other modular mfr was stone
cold dead, and before Doepfer sprang from the soil, Serge was barely in
business but you could get stuff.

I think he got an older system... (?)

There has always been availability through the 'used' market though.
I had friends who were buying, selling and enjoying playing their Moogs and
Buchla's long before Doepfer came on the scene.
Yes, STS might have been one of the few remaining manufacturers, but I was
responding to the idea that part of the Serge appeal was that it was the
only option. Far from it.....

well, at one point serge was the only *new* analogue modular
available, AFAIK. that would the point when moog, polyfusion, etc.
were no longer trading, doepfer was still a dream, and serge was it.
timewise, i'm thinking this would be around mid 80s to mid 90s. ems
has always been around, but not making modulars.

think about it: who was making modular synths in 1990? just serge.

The simple answer to the specific question is they were never
the ONLY game in town. Most musicians were buying second
hand modulars at the time.
