pre-STS Serge PSU voltages and panel current draw.

pre-STS Serge PSU voltages and panel current draw.

2008-01-04 by Bakis Sirros

hello list,

do the pre-STS (early 80's i guess, not the vey first
serge series) serge panels require +12/-12 volts plus
+6volts supply?

also what is the current draw per rail (roughly) for
each panel?
is 1Amp per rail (per panel) enough?
or?

thank you very much in advance,
best regards, :-)
Bakis.

AFAIK, the modules using +6v were the first generation ones
from around 1973, and they were discontinued around 1980.

Modules requiring +6v were:

Peak & Trough
Gate/Ring (old 6 pot/jack ones, also called MOD)
Envelope Generator (old one with "window", not ADSR or DUSG/DTG)
Dual Negative Slew
Dual positive Slew
Triple Comparator
Schmitt Trigger (the early single schmitt with just in & out)
Sequencer (the old 10 stage Pulse sequencer)

and possibly early versions of

Programmer (4 stage)

hell steve,

ok, thank you!
btw, i have a triple comparator module but its
graphics suggest that it must be an early 80's model
(you know, rectangle thin line around the module with
small "serge" letters on bottom).
i do not think that it needs 6volts... maybe they
changed the triple comparator module later too (after
the end of 70's)?

best regards, :-)
Bakis.

That sounds like it would be from 77-79. All the triple
comparators I've seen used the +6v supply.

Take a look at the component side of the circuit board.
There will be a couple of pairs of wires that carry power
from board to board. One pair of wires will be black
(0v). What colour is the other pair of wires?

I've only ever seen ones from 1973/75. It's possible
that Serge changed them later, but I've never seen one.

If you need +6v, Serge just did it by attaching a 6v
regulator to power supply. Any competent tech should
be able to do that.

hello Steve,
thanks for the info again.
ok, probably you're right in all these, as i am no
tech and do not know much about electronics.
i had just given the panel to my tech and he built a
power supply for it.
i know nothing more...
i just had the impression that he told me that the psu
was +12/-12volts.
but probably i am wrong. :-)

best regards,
Bakis.

As the number of modules requiring +6v dwindled it became common
practice to put a small regulator in the panel itself rather than
distribute +6v from the central power supply. It's only a couple bucks
worth of parts and a few milliamps. If I remember right, mine's
mounted to one of the holes on the comparator PCB.

I've seen that on a C/M module too.

BTW, the C/M was also a 6v module - missed it off my list. I don't
know how Rex does them these days (or if he still does them at all).
