scratchy pots

2008-04-05 by ross healy

Hi all

I am trying to work out why 2 of my modules have slight scratchy post
all of a sudden? Arent scratchy pots due to dust? The Serge modules are
closed so how can they have dust?
What do I need to do to get rid of the scratchy pots?

I know you all will agree with me but I LOVE MY SERGE SOOOOOO MUCH :-)

It could be dust or it could be normal wear. Try turning them several
times back & forth and see if
they sound better. If not, they may need to be replaced. If you squirt
pot cleaner in the pot cleaner removes
the lubricant that gives that nice silky feel, so you end up with a
noisy pot that turns funny.

Some pots see a lot more use than others, such as the main frequency pot
of the vco's or the vcf.
Also, during live performance sometimes you grab a control more roughly
because you're caught up in the excitement,
and that can add wear to the pot too. If the system is over 5 years old
and sees a lot of use you may have to replace
a pot or 2.

Is the scratchiness 'noise' when you turn it or is it 'feel'? I have had scratchy feeling pots but never noisy pots.
