what would you like to see in future Serge modules?

Re: what would you like to see in future Serge modules?

Hey Ross,
The XFAD 1/4" output on the new M-odules, the 1/4" output on the UAP and the 1/4" output on the DCSM are all capable of driving a pair of headphones just fine. I have used them with a variety of different headphones when I didn't feel like powering up my computer/audio interface.
Also, the DTG/DSG can be used as a LPG but you won't get the ringing you would from vactrol leakage like in the Plan B Model 13.

I would like to see something like the old Triple Bi-directional Router and Peak & Trough modules.

Hi Mathew

it might be because I am tired but the UAP has 2 x1/4" outs. Are you
plugging the headphones into just one out or are you using 2 outs to a
stereo converter..for the life of me i cant mentally picture this i
guess I should sleep and it will be simple in the morning

Yes I like that Plan B LPG ring.....does the Serge have vactrols in the
DTG/DSG?

totally agree with Matt about the 'triple bi-directional router' module and the 'peak and trough'.

Hi Ross,

I think what I do is set the UAP switch to PAN mode and then plug the headphone jack into the left output. I could be completely wrong, now that you mention it. I haven't done it in awhile. Can somebody else confirm? I might've used a 2 outs to stereo converter...

No, as far as I know, it does not contain vactrols. The Dual Phase Shifter does, though! And probably some other modules...

I don't think these modules were intended to drive anything other than a
high impedance line level input.
I'd recommend a separate outboard headphone driver.

A followup: Chip Puller just set the record straight. Yes, these VCA
based modules
can drive a pair of headphones without worry!

A little more info on this.

I've confirmed that in the case of the those modules with paired
outputs, i.e., UAP, DCSM, or QVM, you can use a 'Y-connector' that
goes from two mono 1/4" phone plugs to a 'stereo' TRS 1/4" jack.

In the case of the XFAD, Chip says Switchcraft makes a barrel adaptor
that goes from 1/4" TS mono phone plug to TRS stereo jack. The part
number for this is: #352A

Either of these solutions will give you what you're looking for!

Dennis is right on with the Quantizer suggestion.
I would add the Dual ASR with "attenuation" pots. One of the truly
overlooked and wonderful modules to ever grace the system
kind regards

I would love to see

A quantizer module with lots of scales witch are selectable over cv or triggers/gates

Think I would want "tactile" control other than knobs.

Maybe a large capacitance-based touchpad (3"x 3") with 3 or 4 degrees of freedom (X, Y, pressure=Z, maybe two fingers = W) with scaling functions on the side and (this is wishful thinking) the ability to capture a control voltage for x secs with a manual trigger to release.

Cheers -- Bill

I would like to see an oscillator with lots of sync options. Variable
sync, modulated sync, clamping... for both audio and CV domains. Way
back when, Aries put out something called the PMS VCO. No, it has
nothing to do with hormones or Midol, but Phase Modulated Sync.
Modulate the Sync (waveform restart) point with a CV. I know, the
honorable Mr Puller's going to frown and grind his teeth, but one can
dream all one wants to.

In that vein, I've never played with the Zeroscillator. I've never
heard any demos that made me think it was anything special. But in
theory, it would seem to be a hot ticket. Anybody care to comment?

i really like the ZO, for its linear fm sound. very nice sound! hence, i have two of them.

Richard Quirk, who used to be on this list, suggested the following
new M-odule. I have to agree, it would be a good one!

TGO / a new 'cell' consisting of 1 section of a Triple Waveshaper, the
middle section of the Wave Multiplier, Ring Mod / Precision Oscillator
/ VCA w/ 1/4" out.

Re: what would you like to see in future Serge modules?

If the output section were reduced to 1" wide an M series six input
SMX could be made.

If you don't remember the SMX, back in the day you could order Multi
Channel Stereo Mixers (SMX) in various widths. Each 2" wide increment
was two independent VCA's driving two channels, each VCA having its
own VC panner. The last 2" increment had a VC master gain and jacks
for stereo Aux in and stereo Mix out. One of my older panels has a 6
input SMX with a UAP next to it. The UAP can be used separately or
(with a switch) can feed the SMX aux inputs, providing a seventh
stereo input.

Recording stuff separately for later editing and mixing fine but
making the mix part of the patch is how I like to work. Don't know
what I'd do without the SMX. Is anything like it available today?

Yes, same here. Great idea! And it would be the first M-odule on my
list...
