Serge Boat

2008-11-26 by fhserge

I am (and was) always interested in "man-machine" interfaces. Ok, I
was born in "Kraftwerk-country"...

There are lot of things I think the Serge system tops any other system
(maybe with the exception of Buchla):
- lightweight design
- colour coded (educational and beautiful) sockets (and knobs if you
like)
- good compromise of density and features (compared to 3 HE and 5 HE)
- very nice (simple but smart) knobs with scaling that frees you form
numbering
...

The old Serge systems (like the one I have) were often mounted in very
flat wooden cases so portability was an easy task.

When I bought my Buchla "boat" I immediately felt how smart that
design was...actually the best design of a synth case I have EVER seen!

A few days ago I went to my metal worker with the Buchla boat in my
hands and asked him to make a "duplicate" in a silver design.
2 days later I was overwhelmed by the beauty of that metal piece.

I put some photos in a new folder I made in the photos section (Serge
Boat) for your viewing pleasure.

Have fun if you have...

Frank

Nice clone!

Are the end pieces aluminum, too?

Does it have the channel hidden in the end pieces that allows the
wiring together of the three sections like the Buchla cabinet?

Care to share how much it cost?

Hi Chris (Buchla "guru"),

yes, end pieces are aluminium, too. Ihave to say that I did not
polish the aluminium, its as dirty as it was on the bench. So after
polishing it might look even a lot better...

I am sill looking for / contemplating about a smart wiring scheme
which could be - in case of a Serge system - very simple
with "holes" in the back of each rack.

I did not ask how much I will have to pay. IF there is demand for
such a "design" I can ask him. Personally I think I will let him
make a "few", probably 3 or 4.

All the best

That problem is easy solved.
Get 2 cases and 2 panels

It's really beautiful, Frank. You have an amazing metalworker. 2 days seems like a short time for something like this. Anyway, I'd be interested in at least 2!

Re: Serge Boat

Hi Matt and all the other group members,

besides the posted replies here I got a few emails privately stating
that people might be interested in such Serge boats.

First of all I think that is manageable (but still have to ask my
metal worker for costs and delivery times)!!!

But before starting building a batch we should carefully collect
nice ideas about, e. g. how to handle the power supply system as the
Serge system is quite "bulky" and "legacy" compared to the Buchla
solution (Don Buchla chose a Laptop alike power supply with a
complete different power distribution system).

It should be quite easy to mount a Serge distro board inside one
panel and carry the power supply separately from the boat.

Then we should discuss the cable mounting (Buchla interconnected
the "distro boards" with cables going inside the wooden end cheeks).

This project could be fun...we will see...

All the best

It's not just a laptop supply. There are three DC-DC converters in the
middle boat which take the 12 volt DC input, and provide outputs of
+/- 15 and + 5. They are on the underside of the power distribution
board, and use the metal of the boat as a heat sink.

Hi Chris,

thanks for clarification but I only wanted to point out that Don
Buchlas power supply system
- is different
- more compact

So we have to collect ideas about the "best" (if there is any) Serge
solution.

Frank,

Would you consider publishing the case's blueprint?

The metal work is absolutely amazing, but I for one would be more
interested in having the case made out of exotic woods rather than
metal, as I love the contrast between organic and sculpted electronics.

Would that be possible?

Cheers -- Bill

Re: Serge Boat

The "blueprint" my metal worker had was the Buchla boat I gave him
as a "model". Maybe he created one...

I can publish all the measurements and make additional pics if you
like.

The boat in the middle is a little bit more than 3 inches deep (for
reasons Chris Muir mentioned) whereas the other two are (like Serge
transit style chassis) 2,5 inches.

All the best

That would be most helpful, thank you - particularly with good
pictures to go with it. Thanks!

Frank

Does the cabinet also lock like the Buchla 200e cabinet..and have a handle?

Re: Serge Boat

Is it possible to have the current boats we have in our systems and just
add the Buchla side on? Arent there already holes in the boats we have
for screwing...and I mean nuts not ourselve loving the Serge JUAT that
little bit to much :-)
