PSD photo + looking for PS4

PSD photo + looking for PS4

2012-01-15 by freq63

Hi
Could someone please post a photo from a PSD?
What choice do I have if I need a PS4 but do not wish to pay $600 for it (I still do not understand why such a price for a power supply)?
Thanx a lot!

I'd be very thankful cause I've no clue how this looks like!

Excellent power supplies are always expensive. The PS4 is an excellent power supply. So, the PS' is quite expensive. Period.

Please keep in mind that a Serge system is definitely NOT a stompbox.

I am just asking one simple question and I read your answer: period!
I thought a forum was made to help each other, not to tell others they are stupid and should shut up. This is the way I feel when I read this.
I did not want to start a polemical thread (do not worry, I won't ask anything anymore here), just asking what make a Serge PSU so special. Technicaly talking.
I would not post this kind of question if I ever thought Serge did not mean good quality too. It's just that I live in a world where $700 for a Power Supply makes me ask this kind of question. I thought experienced Serge users would be able to give me an intelligent answer to a question I do consider very legitimate.
The only infos I found were of this kind: "It is very loud..." "How can I find a cheaper DIY solution..." etc etc. So as I would like to buy one, I prefered to check with Serge users with know-how.
Thanx anyway. I guess your answer is just proportional to the Serge PSU price. But I'm not really surprised either.

No need to get offended just because you're being told by experienced Serge users that it's not a good idea to go this route; many people have contemplated this and have come to the conclusion that's being shared with you.

.. $700 for a power supply is a lot of money anywhere in the world.. but when I invested in a 8panel Serge system.. I went ahead and got the tested/calibrated/recommended PSUs (PS2, PS4 and PS6).. the cost of which is a small percentage of the system..

I will gladly answer your questions regarding the system, but to sum it up; these PSUs are high-grade linear, OEM'ed from PowerOne (if I remember correctly) properly adjusted and calibrated using very high precision test equipment.

That's what makes them special.. if you have any specific tech questions, please fire away and I'll answer them best I can

When buying mine, I was told that these are the same PSUs that fire medical equipment. Beyond that, I'm afraid I have no idea as to why they cost so much, nor have I seen a cheaper alternative elsewhere.

Hope you'll find the list more useful in future!

Hmm... let me see if I can shed some light in the process.

I can understand Laurent's point, and it deserves an explanation - btw, not claiming to be an expert in this area, but merely sharing what I understand.

Power and power distribution is one of the trickiest issues in modulars because so much rides on the stability of the juice you get -- ground, stable oscillators, free of artifacts and a nominal reference across a potentially large system -- this is not a trivial problem. STS has invested some brain cells in creating a power source capable of isolating ground and power and ensuring that power is decent and plentiful for your application. Other modular systems neglect power and it shows - see the early Doepfer systems for instance.

Could you do the same thing with third party/cheaper supplies? You can power the system, but it is likely that you will encounter glitches and artifacts that would be hard to track/explain.

As a percentage of the system cost STS's power supplies are in line with other systems and deliver the quality required.

I would say - if you invest in buying a Ferrari, would you fill it up with dirty gas? It costs a bit more to make it hum the right way. It is the nature of the beast. But you also get far better performance.

So for some of us that have been using the system for some years now, and who have larger systems where power issues are more likely to show than with smaller ones, investing in a clean, reliable and correctly engineered source of power is STEP ONE and fundamental to the operation of the system.

I hope it opens up some doors for you to consider what kind of system you want and if it is really within your budget considering what you want to do. I understand that it is not the same to entertain a large system than to consider one boat/module in isolation.

Re: PSD photo + looking for PS4

I'm going to chime in here with my experience.
In the mid-eighties, I bought a small two panel system from smms and dealt several times with Serge T. After I received and built my system, I told him I wanted to buy a PSU from him since my PSU was getting very hot. His response was, "Just buy a Power One PSU." I told him I'd prefer to buy it from him, but he wouldn't sell me one -- he knew I was a poor student and was cutting costs anyway I could. So I just went to Mouser (or some such supplier) and bought a Power One. I've been happily using them ever since.
I don't know what Rex sells, or how he calibrates it. I'm just repeating what Serge T. told me.

.. it was never implied that a non-STS PSU guarantees problems.. hopefully there won't be any.. but having a non-STS PSU may make troubleshooting much more complicated should issues arise (be they related to the PSU or not).. how can a manufacturer troubleshoot a product when it's powered by an unknown source?.. one will need to get their hands on a legit STS PSU for the purposes of troubleshooting (or just mail the whole panel to STS)

Used power one supplies are usually available for $50 or less on ebay.

Re: PSD photo + looking for PS4

well, I bought this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280796280863?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

still in the process of setting it up for my Serge - maybe I'll be disappointed - but on the whole $29 seems preferable to $1200 which is what STS used to charge for essentially the same supply. Should be good for 10 panels (?) which is more than I will ever own

YMMV. I love the STS modules and I'm a big supporter of Rex, but there is a limit as to how far my credulity will stretch as far as fairy-dusted PSUs are concerned

sorry I didn't get to my camera for the PSD pic yet - very long day!

I guess one could get lucky with one of these ebay purchases as some of the sellers are reselling overstock, so in some cases the psu could be brand new.. in this case, the description does read : "tested to power-on" which would imply the the output voltage and it's consistency has not been verified.. and it's "as-is".. but worse case scenario, you only loose $29 + shipping, so I guess it's worth a try

imo.. basically just boils down to who's ready to take a risk.. I for one don't, and know enough about electronics to understand what could go wrong.. I also love my Serge too much to cut corners :)

.. my $0.02
y.

We used Power One supplies in all kits and factory built units in the 70s and 80s. Very few problems with them. Biggest problem might be the add-on 6-volt regulator for older modules that needed 6 volts.

true. I have a little panel from 82/83 which came with a stock Power One PSU built right into the boat. Still working after 30 years :)

Re: PSD photo + looking for PS4

The last two Serge PSUs I looked in had Condor supplies in them. They are pretty much the same thing as the Power One supplies. Most of these pre-made Linear PSUs are well designed and will do the job. They are usually based around an LM723 regulator chip.
I say *most* because DATEL should be avoided. Their fool designer added an extra winding to the transformer to force the regulator to be running at maximum specified voltage (40 volts), so when the reg blew, it took half my synth with it. Fortunately it was not connected to a Serge! I don't know if Datel even exist any more.
Stick with Power One and Condor, and you should be fine.

Thanx to all of you! Really. It shows me the Serge yahoo group is the right place to ask this kind of questions and that I should not give up so quickly!
These are the kind of constructive answers I expected from a Serge User Group.
Would it be possible for someone to post a photo from a PSD?
Or some where we see the distribution between PSU/PSD/Panel?
Would be awesome!
THANK YOU!!!

I uploaded a photo I still have from when I sold my PS6 that shows all the various parts. I don't know if it has the detail you're looking for but it shows the thick barrel plug cables that go from the PSU to the PSD via the red/green/white wire/connectors.
