As I understood while asking here about Serge PSUs, not everybody uses the STS PSU/PSD combi.
I am wondering how you did to connect one PSU to a few panels without using the original STS PSD?
Any input is welcome!
THANX A LOT

Sharing some infos about the PSD I just received.
If I buy a condor PSU for instance, I won't need to add filtercaps or other components like on the STS PSD distribution.
Will just need to split cables to molex plugs as the PSU is very stable.

I am using a 8.5A switched PSU to drive my 16-panel STS/DIY system without any problems... I've added coils across the rails (to suppress any possible lo-freq hum), and use EMI/RFI Ferrites on the power cables going to the system (to suppress any possible hi-freq interference)... Cheap, reliable, powerful, super-stable, cool (literally), modern. And very lightweight.

The STS PSD's have been replaced by a more modern design with better decoupling (etc), though in reality it doesn't make much sense to decouple that far removed from the actual PCB's, and within the context of Serge's serial power distribution.

Switched PSU here too for a couple of years, driving a six panel early eighties system.

http://www.astrodyne.com/ecatalog/usa/encapsulated-power-supply/MDMC-0306

Ultra stable ! !

This one encapsulated, so if it breaks down it can't be fixed. (just buy a new one)
I have been using it for three years, with no problems.
(the price allows for having a spare ..... just in case)

In the early days of switched PSU's, they were way inferior to linear regarding noise.
Nowadays, it's a different story.
With this Astrodyne, I can not hear (nor "scope-see") any difference.

I agree with Guy;

Cheers, Jon !

I forgot to mention a few details.
I'm using single-rail PSU's -- those el-cheapo Chinese SomeBrand-Used-Everywhere -- so I had to use two and connect them so to produce dual output voltages. At about 50€ a piece, no big deal… I'm sure these come in dual-rail too, but the singles were all what my local supplier had available at that time.

They're built into a 19" rack casing (with ample room to spare for another PSU, if that would be needed), with power switch, signal LED's and a grounding socket. It's connected to the system cabinets (4) with 4-pin XLR connectors.

It takes a bit of DIY effort to put something together like this, but, to me, it's been worth every minute of the two hours I've spend on it.

Wondering in the back of my head, if switched PSUs have made such great strides, why are the mfr's still pumping out linear supplies?

A good question.
