Julian, There is no difference between the pads except that you can choke the "symbaL" pads. I usually use a regular tom pad for my hi-hat. I guess if you wanted to be able to choke your hi-hat, you could use a symbal pad. They are tricky to mount if you don't have the supplied pole that goes with them. I have 4 such pads but was never able to get the factory hardware. FYI the bass pad is just a regular Simmons piezo pad, but with grey rubber... Ask more if you need to!
