bass drum pad noise

Hey guys, anybody have the issue with your bass drum pad sounding like a giant wooden box. not thru the brain, but just the pad itself. I've changed my bass drum beaters over to tennis balls, but the pad is still rally loud. I'm afraid to fill the inside with expanding foam or something because I don't want to damage the electronics or the value of the pad. any ideas I can try. Thanks, Jon

Layering different materials on the back of the wooden batter plate will help some. Rubber and some dense wood maybe. 

Probable no need to cover the complete batter head. Maybe not use sheet wood but rather break the construction up in different thickness and shapes spread randomly on the back surface using short screws to mount.

 

If you can get hold of it there exist a type of metal sheet that are made up of a thin sheet of metal, then a some kind of rubber and then a metal sheet on top. These sheets are very heavy and dense and are used in construction where sound proofing and resonance control are needed. I was given a small sample a few decades ago to test as batter head for electronic drums.

Hi there,
what type of pad are you talking about ?
Some were worse than others, especially the SDS7 first generation (XLR connection). It's been better on the following pad generation but still...
honnestly Simmons pads are not very good on the acustic point of view. Even the Hexaheads were kind of noisy.
but anyway you could maybe just feel it with Cellulosis (cotton wool padding) to see how it goes on the resonnant point of view. And it won't be radical works on the pad.

Hans Suggestions are very interesting too about the impact / shock absorbing aspect. That s probably your main noisy problem.

If the noise is caused by the hollow body of the pad, fill it up with 
either glasswool or stonewool. Take care not breathing the fibres in while 
working with the material.. Afraid? There is another solution: Natural 
wool, normally used for knitting.
This treatment has another positive aspect: Your bassplayer will not false 
trigger your pad any more.

I used to put a thick chunk of foam rubber in there..it needs to touch the beater area and the front of the shell...you don't need to fill the whole pad. it should stop the shell resonating.

just remove the black trim screws..then the shell screws and remove carefully so as not to crack the shell. the trim screws are black dome headed and the inner screws are often silver flat headed countersunk screws. a lump of foam around 5" thick should do it [I'm guessing here though so measure it ] .

It needs to be oversized a little, maybe an inch or so , so it is compressed / squeezed when you replace the shell .
