Learning BASIC for PSIM-1?

Learning BASIC for PSIM-1?

2004-02-13 by j_inform3r

I'm really intrigued by the potential of the PSIM-1. Unfortunately
I've never used BASIC and I feel like this definitely will hamper
my ability to fully use this module. Can anyone recommend
some sites that give good coverage on the foundations of
BASIC? I'm really curious as to how a BASIC code can enable
the module to take on new and different functions. I'm hoping
that learning some code will make this clearer.
cheers,
John

John,

Don't worry. Learning the code isn't that difficult. Starting out, you can
simply download the ("module") code already available and load it into the
PSIM-1 and it will work just as it's supposed to. You *don't* have to know
any code to use the PSIM-1. Of course, I'm sure eventually, you'll want to
start writing your own applications (and sharing them with others) so the
easiest way to learn it is to simply dig into it.

Here's a link to the AtomPRO site:
http://www.basicmicro.com

The microcontroller (computer) the PSIM-1 uses is the AtomPRO-24M. Download
the documentation for the AtomPRO.

Basic AtomPRO Manual
http://www.basicmicro.com/downloads/docs/atompro.pdf

Also, study the code already available in the Files Section of the Group's
site.
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/SynthModules/

You can open the code in any text viewer or go ahead and download the
development software package from Basic Micro:
http://www.basicmicro.com/downloads/software/BMAtomPro.zip

Once you have a PSIM-1 module and the AtomPRO manual in your hands... it
will become pretty easy to start by looking at the code that is already
written and copying and pasting the routines into your own programs. Many
of the subroutines will be common among ALL the PSIM-1 programs. Study the
code and actually read the AtomPRO manual.

Best regards,

Hey Brice,

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm definitely going to dig into those
resources(links) when I have adequate time. It's nice to know that the
module comes with "example code," but I'm sure I'll want to get my hands in
it after I have the module for a while. I think that's the only way to get
the absolute fullest out of this "chameleon module!"

               cheers,
               John

John,

All the code it will come with is already available to you online. Just go
to the Files section of the group's site. There are programs and MP3's
there. Check out the code. It's all there with more being added all the
time.

Thank you for your interest.

Re: Learning BASIC for PSIM-1?

BASIC was written as a teaching language. I started using it
when I was 11 years old. It has been used successfully in grade
schools, high schools, and college. It is simple but powerful.

In other words, it was designed as a "first" language for real
people, not just rocket scientists.

Grant has it right. Of all languages, BASIC is perhaps the easiest
to a hold of. And it's really fun to use, particularly for smallish
things like PSIM code.

It's really fun!

Hi Mike,

The Feb. issue of SPIN magazine says a Mike Marsh is the
drummer for the band Dashboard Confessional.

Any relation?

I hope this gives no offense.

Best,

Grant

Re: Learning BASIC for PSIM-1?

No offense whatsoever! And no relationship that I know of either.

There are many Mike Marsh-es out there. When I got to grad school, I
began getting menacing phone calls and threats to 'kick my Commie
a**'. Yikes! Turns out there was a professor on campus that
supported the Nicaraguan gov't against the COntras or something. I
also still get calls to DJ at weddings - I'm not a DJ, and I have
never been a DJ! (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

But I *am* the Mike Marsh that does the occassional demo for Paul S
on my MOTM. And I just ordered a Noise Ring from one Grant Richter -
any relation :) ? which I am impatiently awaiting. Man that thing
LOOKS COOL!

I'm also the Mike Marsh that ordered a PSIM and now I can't sleep
thinking about it. Yep: geek.

Mike
