Philip, The powdered iron core being destroyed would lower the inductance of the coil, thus raising the oscillator frequency to the point where you have that 17 khz resting pitch. Have you tried inserting any ferrous objects in the coil to see if it puts it in a range that you can play it at all? Being that you are going to replace the coil it won't hurt anything.
