New theremin stuff: Bartleby, Touchless, James Coleman, Duet
2006-08-25 by David V
Hello all, While others elsewhere are arguing about silly stuff, how about some pointers to some interesting, newly discovered theremin music? Received: the soundtrack to the movie Bartleby. After contacting the movie house, they immediately said they were redoing the soundtrack album (which, disappointingly, was a CD-R) with more music on it, and offered a license for unlimited play for $50 (which I'm still thinking about....it's not *that* stellar an album, and paying fees for permission to play sets a bad precedent, but I'm tempted nonetheless because it's well below statutory rates). Coming: The Touchless album by Elisabeth Schimana's International Theremin Orchestra, and Zaibatsu by James Coleman. I'm only vaguely familiar with the former, and know nothing whatsoever about the latter other than it is all original music for theremin. Both were ordered from cdemusic.org operated by the Electronic Music Foundation. Gordon sent me a link to an intriguing new ensemble simply calling itself Duet for Theremin and Lap Steel, featuring the theremin improvisations of Scott Burland, who as best as I can gather after tracking down his web site, has been doing the theremin improv for quite awhile now, and a lot of it live, though I'm not sure where he's from.
