New Theremin Voice

New Theremin Voice

2007-08-23 by kmg5443

Here is the "test bench voice" of the Keppinger theremin. My
undeducated, no musical training opinion is that is sounds nice. Now,
don't start critiquing the "musical" selection. The sucker is here on
my workbench, all laid out, naked and bare to the world, wires
dangling out everywhere, wrench attached to a temporary coathanger
antenna, pocketknife laying on top of the makeshift expression loop,
and lacking even a cabinet to clothe it in yet. I'm trying my best
not to knock the two big coils over that are sitting on top of the
bench.

You can hear high frequency harmonics in the background, I am pretty
positive from the volume oscillator. Its almost a 2 Mb file, so be
warned before you click on it. There may be some flutter modulation
to the thing...there is a ceiling fan going in the radio shack here
to keep my dainty self from sweating. Us spoiled deskbound engineers
aren't allowed to do that too often, or we melt.

There is obviously more work to do. Some of you may have been curious
how it sounds. I vented to Uncle Howie in a separate email off list.
He told me he was expecting it from me, as these things would try the
patience of Job.

The file is located at

Philip,

Really appreciate you sharing "the baby's first words".

As you mentioned, you still have some tweaking to do however one can
hear that the theremin's voice is gorgeous!

I will hold off on congratulating you until you declare it "finished"
however it sounds like you are on the road to having an heirloom
quality instrument.

I agree. I've been keeping up with your e-mails on this. With such an
involved journey, sometimes you don't see much in the way of replies
because, frankly, I can't think of anything to say. So don't interpret
lack of replies as lack of interest, Phil. :-)

Great job Philip. The background oscillation is between 8khz and 9khz.
 See spectrum here:
http://home.comcast.net/~pinballic/Keppinger_first_sounds_copy.jpg

Adding the pocket knife to increase antenna mass is what Lev did in
T.E.O., so you are in good company.

Nice to hear your voice, also.

Where did you get the neat spectrum analyzer program??

Re: New Theremin Voice

Oh not at all, we all lead busy lives. I'm surprised I got it done this
quickly. I am lucky though. My bride Sheri has offered to help me build
the cabinet for the theremin. She is quite the handi-gal and is better
with a cordless screwdriver than I am. I, however, am better with a
soldering iron...

Maybe we'll be able to record something for Christmas for you on the
new theremin.

Philip,
I am using the fft view inside DC Six:
http://www.virtins.com/?gclid=CP_fl-bwjI4CFQlQWAodcRrtEw

I use the software for audio restoration. They have a cheaper version
that says it does spectrum display:

http://www.enhancedaudio.com/millennium.htm

There are many spectrum/fft programs out there, some free or cheap:

http://tinyurl.com/2g4rfm
http://www.vicman.net/lib/fft/free
http://www.sigview.com/download.htm

I have no experience with the others.

I think I used a bad url for the DC six reference:
