the end of woe

Hello guys, Well a very sad collection of stories entered my Inbox today from you all - I know I'm usually the one to wax lyrical on the impending apocalypse but I think you've all got the upper hand today! This week, what with holidays past and the poor weather (in UK at least) is statistically the most depressing of the year, so my only advice is to stick it out til the spring! 1) Glass players (Spellbound list) - it's a shame they haven't been as responsive, my theory is that theremin players are on the whole 'rock stars' whereas ondes martenot/glass harmonia are 'classical divas', and the rules are different there - a classic example is Celia Sheen, a fantastic UK thereminist who does session work as a violinst and started theremin to diversify her opportunities. She will never play without MU payment, thus she never plays in UK, no one knows how good her talents are! I suspect many artists are unable/unwilling to clear music, or some are probably so suspicious of 'new technologies' they don't accept the internet is a powerful artistic medium! But...keep trying - how about a 30 min show if you can't get the material together? It would be very novel none-the-less. 2) Levnet - what prey is the latest saga from there? Anyone care to give me a potted digest? I think Lydia K had it right when she said to me, in her inimicable Russian style, 'Levnet..it's like people gossiping in the kitchen'. I personally prefer the bedroom metaphor; it's a typical amateurs space for people who are masters of their own bedroom, who hid behind the anonymity of the internet as a means to vent the frustrations they would never be able to in their 'real' lives. Sad to say all internet communities (of any passion and critical mass) become like this at times or all the time. I got a lot out of my membership of several years, but equally it took a lot out of me at time - then the masses decided to have a spat on me...without provocation, on the exact day I was caught up in terrorist attack of London. That week taught me how cruel people can be, and it is sad that people involved in something I was (until then) so passionate about would be the ones to stick the boot in. Take comfort: what does not kill you makes you stronger, learn from the challenges and experience your art with people who will provide you with real feedback - an audience! Kevin, good luck with finishing your CD, don't worry if it takes longer than you hope, make something we can all be proud to hear! 3) Bureaucratic bast&rds - Very sorry to hear your story about the college, David, it makes me realise how selfish I am by comparison - I'm studying an MA which is paid for by EU subsidies and we all complain about the college, but really I guess I'm lucky. No one will think less of you - you need to concentrate on your survival! - how about making Spellbound fortnightly or monthly to keep it 'alive' but less arduous? And I'm sure the links from shows to artists is enough promotion to aid a CD sale or two... As they used to say in England 'Chin up, old boy, stiff upper lip and all that!' -- Susi (aka Ms Hypnotique) Tel: 07981 222799 http://www.hypnotique.net http://www.lunette.co.uk http://www.babyslave.net See our blog: http://www.babyslave.wordpress.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
