Lydia Kavina on radio 4

Hey chaps,
thanks for all the great advice on working with youngsters - I like your
idea of a 'theremin idol' Gordon and may well just steal that great idea -
and even make some 'theremin idol' badges in honour! (better option that
unhealthy sweets, I think). And brevity and fun aspects duly noted. I
will let you know how it goes!

Lydia Kavina was on the radio this morning on a sort of chit chat show on
BBC Radio 4, you can listen to it for the next week or so on the Beeb
website here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/midweek.shtml

She talks about a show's she's doing tonight at the BFI. And plays a track
from her new album and talks a bit about the theremin, her uncle - usual
stuff. She was very charming, as always!

Bruce Woolley tells me she's recently been in a short film about her, which
is being shown at BFI on Monday night. Anyone know anything about this film?

The kids will ask questions about everything -- they will ask about
how you personally got interested in the theremin, they will ask how
much theremins cost. When I did lecture/demos for a local science
club they asked if I wore special shoes to play in! (Someone must
have noticed that I changed from my beat-up equipment-moving shoes
into a nicer pair.)

The biggest mistake I've seen beginners make is they try to vary the
pitch by moving their hand up and down rather than to and from the
rod. Some kids will try to play tunes and others will go after
sound-effects. Hint: set your Epro's range to the low register -- for
some reason kids like the high-pitched sounds. :)

I tried to listen from the office here... they don't allow us to
download Real Player here so I couldn't listen.

Yep, Lydia is charming indeed. I enjoyed meeting Lydia in Asheville,
NC at the Ethermusic festival and I can't say enough great things
about her.

I haven't heard about it, of course (hey, I'm in Kansas City, Mo. --
not exactly the center of art and culture for the world). Will look
forward to seeing it if it becomes viewable via the internet.
