512MB is the max an S-1000 can access and 512byte/sector is what it can read/write.
AKAI S-1000 doesnt do in-depth formatting, is more "soft" formatting and "arrange" modes.
Pre-formatted ZIP-100 disks work.
Theres more pre-formatted media out there,- MOD p.ex. ...
I have ZIP 100, Jazz 2GB and 230MB/512byte/sector MOD as well as 640MB/1024byte/sector MOD media.
Only ZIP 100 and 230MB/512byte/sector media works w/ S-1000.
520MB/512byte sector MOD media would work too,- but I dont have.
The larger media beyond 520MB and w/ 1024byte/sectors works only w/ EMU EOS samplers here, not AKAI S-1000/3000 series samplers.
When using SCSI harddrives and/or Syquest removable media drives (44 /88 MB),- the S-1000 does the formatting w/o issues.
You can use larger SCSI HDs, but 520MB is the accessable limit and the other space will be unused.
I use 1GB SCSI harddrives formatted to 500MB.
You can pre-format SCSI HDs and removable media drives w/ old Mac PPC machines (OS 8 -9) and SCSI Director application.
Dont try latest OS machines, regardless of Mac or PC,- AFAIK,- it wont work.
I use a PC (Win XP) and an Adaptec SCSI card,- actually I dont remember the model number,- which works fine.
It has a mini-50-pole SCSI connector.
You need that connector on one end of a SCSI cable and a 50-pole Centronics on the other end of the cable.
That way, Im able to use the computer and Synthax /Hybrid Arts 19" SCSI and optical as well as Syquest drives loaded w/ AKAI samples for transfers to the machines (S-1000 / S-1100/ EMU E-64 / Win XP computer).
According to Steinberg Wavelab ...
Wavelab 4.01b is the latest supporting SCSI and it works only w/ EMU E64 directly (Sampler to PCI/SCSI card).
With S-1000, you need to transfer all data to SCSI drive 1st, then connect that drive to the computer w/ SCSI PCI card attached and then copy data from that drive into Wavelab.
Floppies to be used in S-1000 can be only formatted by the S-1000 itself,- thats my experience.
As a reference,- I own S-1000 and 2x S-1100 as 1st owner.
Had a S-1000PB too which is now gone.

I must admit I didn’t know that you shouldn’t format ZIP disks. I thought about connecting both drives, but I don’t have a suitable cable for disk drive to disk drive. Also witout digging into my room full of antique PCs (Not easy, it is also full of building materials!) I don’t have a PC with a suitable SCSI connector. I haven’t found an Akai compatable formatter which works with 64 bit Windows 7, if there is one out there please let me know what it is, I would like to try that option, even just to format some floppies
