Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: disk drive or zip or HD ??

It's not that simple at first.
There is a more common ext zip that is parallel port.
Same 25pin connector. DOES NOT WORK WITH S1100. You
need the SCSI one.

Your Sampler has a 50pin Amphenol (SCSI 1 call that)
The ext SCSI 100Mb zip drive has a 25pin dSub, like an
old beige mac, (still SCSI 1)
So the cable you need is 50pin Amphenol to 25pin dsub.
The two connectors on the zip are the same I think,
but one has ZIP on it, which is the input to the
drive, the other is for continuation of the SCSI bus.
(If you connect another item here, you turn the
termination off)

You select 5 and term on on the back of the zip, and
if you plug the stuff up to the sampler, when you
power up with a zip in the drive and you select hard
disk, the zip drive will appear on the default ID of
5. Then you decide partition size, I match RAM size on
mine, 3 x 32Mb for a zip. Then you FORMAT, make a cup
of tea and then the disk is ready for saving samples
to. I recommend some paperwork in advance, labelling
each disk and having a book of what's where. Your
choice, most people don't, and then have trouble
finding stuff i suspect.
After you have stuff on the disk, when you select hHD,
you'll see the partitions and volumes like a fixed
drive.

There is another SCSI 50pin connector you get on jaz
drives and some PCs that looks like an artists
impression of the son of the first two connectors.
This gets called SCSI 2 by lots of people. Same
signals etc.
All of the above is also called narrow SCSI

After that it gets more complicated with faster wider
systems which have been re-named at least once and
there are a few different drive types on the same
connector too, as well as identical types of drives
with different connectors. There are some good
articles on the web, you may ignore them for your
current needs..
The other major sampler manufacturers have all had to
educate the musicians, so there are normally documents
that <explain> what's going on. I found the
Kurzweil.com support amterial to be the best, but the
EMU stuff is good. The old mac manuals are good too.
Welcome to SCSI
