i have the same problem. i use a SCSI zip drive. They work fine for
all saving functions. Just make sure not to get one larger than 100mb,
as the s1100 can only use 60mb of the disk, so there is not point in
a 250mb, or a 1gig one. A HD would be a good choice too, but the
maximum size useable with it is 500mb, so you'd need to find quite an
old one. i think the cheapest solution is the zip drive, they last
very well, and zip disks are very easy and increasingly cheaper to buy.

Hope this is some help.

Hello and thnx bro;)

I've found at last that SCSI ZIP drive is actually most reasonable
solution, but I need some help still...
I have found on ebay :

http://search.ebay.co.uk/search/search.dll?
from=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=scsi%2Bzip

SCSI zip drives, but I am not sure which ones is suitable for AKAI
s1100 ???

Would you mind to help me ???

many thanx.....

nice communityby the way.....

Re: disk drive or zip or HD ??

I'm not sure how easy it will be to find the drives you are looking
for outside of Ebay. I struggled to find any SCSI ZIp drives in any
of the second-hand computer shops here.

In the end I bought two Syquest EZ230MB drives and one Syjet 1.5GB
drive (for my other sampler) very cheaply on Ebay. Iomega ZIP's I
have seen occasionally in the second-hand music shops but the prices
are heavily inflated over Ebay. You could also have a look in the
adverts in Sound on Sound online. I paid about £60 for the two EZ230
with about 13 cartridges thrown in on Ebay. The Syjet would also
work with the S1100 but would be a waste of its capacity. HAving
said that I paid £9 for it on Ebay and got 5 1.5GB cartridges for it
as well!

Happy hunting

If you want external zip100 SCSI, there are about 6 a
month on ebay.co.uk, sometimes with a decent stock of
media. The disks rarely go for more than \ufffd1 each now
that me and ganamor have stopped bidding against each
other to own the entire universe of zip.
They're all over the UK and collection cuts costs
dramatically if you shop local.
My best deal ever was from a computer guy who must
have thought very little of the ext drive biz in
general and zip in particular. Only 100Mb, why bother
etc.

If you are unable to source, I still have loads.
However, the quest will strengthen your resolve Luke.

Doesn't your cousin Dave have any? <(:>{}

Re: disk drive or zip or HD ??

2007-07-17 by filipovske

Thanks so much folks;)

But I am still confuse about type of SCSI cables connections, i've
found one on ebay - 26 pin D port - is it telling you anything????
All I need (except other pleasures...) is confirmation - that ZIP
will work fine with SCSI.
and by hte way - is AKAI 'see' ZIP as a HD ??? and how to connect
everything???

sorry for my lame questions...... SCSI stuff is quite new for
myself...

have a nice day gentelmans!

Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] Re: disk drive or zip or HD ??

2007-07-17 by Les Lambert

It's not that simple at first.
There is a more common ext zip that is parallel port.
Same 25pin connector. DOES NOT WORK WITH S1100. You
need the SCSI one.

Your Sampler has a 50pin Amphenol (SCSI 1 call that)
The ext SCSI 100Mb zip drive has a 25pin dSub, like an
old beige mac, (still SCSI 1)
So the cable you need is 50pin Amphenol to 25pin dsub.
The two connectors on the zip are the same I think,
but one has ZIP on it, which is the input to the
drive, the other is for continuation of the SCSI bus.
(If you connect another item here, you turn the
termination off)

You select 5 and term on on the back of the zip, and
if you plug the stuff up to the sampler, when you
power up with a zip in the drive and you select hard
disk, the zip drive will appear on the default ID of
5. Then you decide partition size, I match RAM size on
mine, 3 x 32Mb for a zip. Then you FORMAT, make a cup
of tea and then the disk is ready for saving samples
to. I recommend some paperwork in advance, labelling
each disk and having a book of what's where. Your
choice, most people don't, and then have trouble
finding stuff i suspect.
After you have stuff on the disk, when you select hHD,
you'll see the partitions and volumes like a fixed
drive.

There is another SCSI 50pin connector you get on jaz
drives and some PCs that looks like an artists
impression of the son of the first two connectors.
This gets called SCSI 2 by lots of people. Same
signals etc.
All of the above is also called narrow SCSI

After that it gets more complicated with faster wider
systems which have been re-named at least once and
there are a few different drive types on the same
connector too, as well as identical types of drives
with different connectors. There are some good
articles on the web, you may ignore them for your
current needs..
The other major sampler manufacturers have all had to
educate the musicians, so there are normally documents
that <explain> what's going on. I found the
Kurzweil.com support amterial to be the best, but the
EMU stuff is good. The old mac manuals are good too.
Welcome to SCSI

hi filip

lot's of external scsi zip drives on ebay at the
moment. any of them should do. but you do need
the right cable, like this one:
