S1000 Floppy issue

S1000 Floppy issue

2010-03-31 by a p

Hey everyone. I have a weird issue with my floppy drive. I try and format discs to use with my S1000, and when its done formatting, I try to save something to it, and it says unformatted disc. I have tried this with about 5 diff discs, all fresh formats, to no avail. I have nothing here, to test if it can load sounds or anything, so am definitely open to ideas. Anyone?

Thanks!

either 2 things I can think of
1. you're selecting 'low' and not 'high' although i have an s1100 so im not sure if the s1000 has this option.
2. it's your disk drive
what OS you running?, as in, the OS on startup without an OS disk.

1.)
S-1100 and S-1000 have these options

2.)
I guess it´s the disk drive !!!!
I had the same case in the 90th and before it happened, data written to disk appeared corrupted when reading.

Better look for a replacement,- check Route66Studios for replacement disk drives.
http://www.route66studios.com/drives.html
I see S-900,- maybe it fits the S-1000.

If you´ve found a replacement drive,- move over using SCSI ( simple SCSI, not SCSI 2 or SCSI ultrawide or such) harddrives and/or MO drives,- just only using the floppy drive to transfer your floppy-disk library to the harddrives and backup on the MO drive.
Once done,- forget the floppys at all.

Even version of OS in eproms doesn´t matter anymore ´cause you can simply copy the latest OS to he harddrive and boot from there.

Advice:
Don´t believe, every HD floppy drive will work in a S-1xxx series sampler,- so you probably won´t get it cheap.
Once,-I replaced a floppy drive in my S-1000,- it was definitely a TEAC,- but I forgot the model number, so some investigation is needed.

If your drive is at fault:
I looked into replacement floppy drives for the S1000 a while ago when I _thought_ mine had died, and I found from
my online research at the time two drives that are apparently compatible:

TEAC FD235HF & Chinon FZ357 (?)

I also have this one noted, but I think it's the one in my S1000:

ALPS DFP723F03A

Unfortunately I don't remember if it was a simple pin reversal compared to a
standards PC drive, but it rings a bell :)

I found some on ebay at the time

Also check http://akaiscsifaq.digidude.net/akaifaq_floppy.htm

Hope this helps,
Steve

Hey guys I don't have a replacement drive yet for the s1000 but I will
this summer. Here is a tip I don't use the floppy in fact I put in an
internal Iomega SCSI zip 100...this works great!

Ok...the HD S1000 has a special SCSI card for internal drives but the
truth is the standard SCSI card found in every S1000 can be used with
a simple mod.

Look at your SCSI card and you will see a spot where a 50 pin IDE
header is missing, did some research and found out that this is active
and simply just needs the header installed to work!

I installed the header on the SCSI card and put in an Iomega zip 100
SCSI drlive, the zip drive uses the same 5v and has the same power
connector as the old floppy drives.

You have to make your own 50 pin internal IDE ribbon cable, you will
also find you can still use the out board SCSI connector as well.

I use this setup for live shows on 2 s1000 units and it works great, I
take advantage of the auto SCSI sample loading feature that few people
use. It only works with SCSI and your sequencer calls the shots over
to the S1000 via program change messages.

This works great because you have 100 Meg zips to load from and if
your HD crashes durring a show your screwed, but with the zip you can
just pop in your backup disc.

Akai S-1100 MOD media issue

2010-04-20 by PeWe

Hi !

I have a SCSI Fujitsu MOD connected to my S-1100.

S-1100 & Fujitsu format and partition Verbatim Optical 230MB, 3.5"
Optical Disk Rewritable 230MB flawlessly, but fails formatting and
partitioning of

Verbatim Optical 640MB, 2048 Bytes/Sector 3.5" Rewritable media.

EMU E6400 does formatting and partitioning of this media and together w/
the Fujitsu,- so its not the drive not being able to recognize the
640MB disks.

Any ideas why Akai S-1100 fails ?

I also use 1GB SCSI harddrives w/ the S-1100 and the S-1100 formats
520MB of these and creates 40MB partitions,- so its able to recognize
larger drives but only uses a portion.
I wonder why this isnt the case w/ the 640MB MODs ...

thx in advance
