S1100 quiet outputs and crashes

S1100 quiet outputs and crashes

2015-10-12 by pavlovromaan@...

I've just picked up an S1100 and for the most part it seems to work ok but I've noticed two things. One the outputs are a bit low even with the main volume turned up high I still have to apply a fair bit of gain on my pre-amp and DAW.

More worrying is the way it freezes when I go to the FX edit page and select the triple tap ECHO delay. It just seems to hang the whole system requiring a power cycle. This happens either with OS 4.3 loaded off floppy or 1.39 off ROM. Going to try reseating the effects board but I was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem?

Hi there.
I cannot help directly with your fault(s) and have not suffered those problems,
hoever if you ecide you are going to switch out parts I have the following
from an S1100 that was working and parted for spares for other machines.
*Motherboard
*Effects board
*SCSI board
*I/O boards
*PSU board
If you do decide to go down that route let me know the parts you want and make me an offer
for them. I will be shipping from Japan so there will be some postage to consider.
Good luck!
Best regards
Tee.

Hi there,

It sounds to me that you have 2 separate problems there. i doubt that they are related.

re: the outputs - Have you tried using the additional outputs, rather than the main outs? try changing the outputs in the 'mix' page.

The second problem sounds like a memory issue to me, how many RAM cards are in there (how much memory have you got in the 1100) ? If you have more than one card, try removing them all and testing one at a time - obviously not Hot Swapping!

I doubt reseating the FX card will help as it seems to be a problem on one preset only - but deffo worth a try too.

Good luck :)

the s1000 service manual has extensive instructions for calibrating
the output levels, haven't read the s1100 service manual but I imagine
it has them too.
you need an osciliscope and a screwdriver.

these samplers are getting quite old. re-calibration probably wouldn't hurt.

I'll try the service manual recalibration as you're right after all the years and being posted around the country it's probably time those pots got re-aligned.

I'll try taking out the memory and reseating that too, it's got 8MB (4megawords) I think on a single board. So far all I've done is replace the back light. Bit stumped by this dodgy fx problem, I wonder if it's some kind of corrupted memory address and if so where it's getting corrupted (bad EEPROM? - but wouldn't an OS loaded off the disk overwrite the OS in the CPU's RAM anyway).

Will keep you informed.
