Re: [akaiS1000S1100Samplers] S1100 & CD-ROM drive problems

2015-12-09 by Ewan Colsell

when I first tried to connect a cd-rom drive to my S1000hd I
discovered that the SCSI card was terminated on the inside. I had to
remove the terminating resistor packs before it would work with
external.SCSI devices. and use an external terminator after the cdrom
drive.

both ends of a SCSI chain must be terminated, always.

Well, youre talking about S-1000HD,- not S1000PB, not S1000 and not S1100.

I owned S1000PB and still own 1 S1000 as well as 2 S1100,- and because the OP mentioned compatibility w/ other samplers, Ill comment on p.ex. EMU too because I own a EMU E64 in addition.

1.)
All my non-HD AKAI Sampler models work w/ a CD-ROM drive, a HDD, a Syquest removable media drive and a MOD in a SCSI chain !

I did nothing to any of my AKAI samplers SCSI-card internal termination (if it exists at all since there isnt any HDD inside).

Successfull usage of a SCSI CD-ROM - drive depends on brand and type of the drive !
These should be normally 2x / 4x speed,- 8x speed sometimes works too.
Old Apple 4x drives work for sure, Im using a very old one w/ a caddy and another one without caddy.
Old TEAC work too.
If it is the last drive in a chain, it should be terminated, mine work w/ passive and active termination alternately.

2.)
SCSI-drives tested/ working w/ other sampler brand/model, p.ex. EMU (or Yamaha, Kurzweil etc.),- often dont work w/ old AKAI S-series samplers.

3.)
Compatibility also might depend on firmware version of the optical drive, not only brand/speed.

P.

Where is located those terminators? I didn't find any manuals how install hard drive or SCSI board description... I think my CD drive terminated in the end otherwise it could not work with other samplers.
I changed ID number to 5 in CD-ROM and now S1100 read CD disk successfully, I guess that 5 is default number when system start and scan for ext hard drive... owner's manual says when install internal HD the number must be 5, so I connected external CD drive to SCSI card and it works only with ID 5.

yes, they are all slightly different, but they all share the exact
same SCSI card, so the configuration rules are the same. terminate
both ends, and nothing else.

I would expect to find the internal scsi connector terminated on
Samplers without an internal HD fitted. but not the external one.

I was pretty surprised that I had to remove the resistors from inside
the Sampler. but when you remember the SCSI rules, it makes prefect
sense.

I also have an apple cd-rom drive and it works perfectly. and a zip drive.

I found all my SCSI devices and cables at a fleamarket, it took some
hunting, but eventually i found them all. much cheaper than ebay!

AKAI S-1000 / S-1100 default SCSI ID is #6 !
Cant be changed.
Set your drives to any other than ID #6,- so #0 - #5 and/or #7

When you have a working SCSI card in your S-1000 / S-1100 dont even think about internal termination, I never did and Im an old fart and 1st owner.

You have a working drive, a 50-pin Centronics cable you plug between drive and sampler and a 50-pin Centronics terminator plug (passive or active,- active is w/ LED) you plug on the 2nd SCSI connector your CD-ROM drive-case offers.
Now do the ID settings ...
Thats all.

But my SCSI drive Apple CD600i working well before with other samplers without additional terminator plug in the 2nd connector, I switched ID from 0-7 no problems.... I think my S1100 SCSI card unterminated and working only with ID5 like for internal hard drive installed.

I guess, all the SCSI samplers are terminated internally, so you wont have to do anything.
On my EMU E64 termination is software-switchable though.

Samplers without an internal HD fitted. but not the external one.

I dunno how it is w/ AKAI S-1000/ S-1100, just because I never cared for and never had to.
I bought the samplers new and the SCSI cards were assembled already.
Have the right drive, connect and set ID,- works ...
Its that simple.
But never ever have TWO or more AKAI samplers in a chain w/ the same drives !!!

I also have an apple cd-rom drive and it works perfectly. and a zip drive.

Yep, Zip- and Jazz drives here too ...

I collected all SCSI cables, terminators and types of drives existing, just only to have all my libraries available til I die.
I sometimes transfer and convert for other hardware- and software-sampleplayers too, so I need all in working condition.

terminators are either resistor packs that fit onto a circuit board,
or and external "useless plug" with no cable, but maybe a passthrough
connector.
on more modern SCSI devices you might find a switch to enable
termination or even automatic termination.

its quite likely that you cdrom has internal termination

you are right, SCSI ID 5 is the default place to load an OS from.
the s1k samplers can only speak to one SCSI drive at a time. the hdisk
subpage of the disk page lets you change the SCSI ID that the sampler
is trying to talk to. but this is reset to ID5 on startup
you can also eject a CD/Zip by choosing PARK. in the hdisk page.
although it is designed for turning of harddisks nicely.

if it works then don't change anything though!

one thing to remember is that after changing cdroms you need to try
accessing the cdrom drive a few times before it gets read sucrssfully.
its perfectly normal on my setup anyway.

Apple CD600i should work, yes.

Again,- internal S-1000 / S-1100 SCSI ID is #6,- period.

You access SCSI ID #5 from AKAI menue WHEN your ext. drive is set to ID
#5 ...
understand ?

Theres normally NO harddrive installed in an AKAI S-1000 or S-1100 !!!
Only when the model name is S-1000HD (or S-1100HD, if that existed).
There are no mounting brackets or HDD cage available inside a S-1000 or
S-1100.

Ok, for me is good with ID5 I will use it as default number when sampler startup and searching for SCSI device 5.
One more question - where I can find the instruction how to install internal hard drive? I understand that need to connect 50-pin cable from the end of SCSI card and power cable to small mainboard socket near card, also switch HDD jumper to 5, correct?
