Hello all,

I am a new subscriber to the list. My name is Tristan, and I live in
Massachusetts USA. I am a proud owner of the o so affordable and
versatile S1000. Sporting a SCSI port, my sampler has access to an
external CD-ROM and Zip drive. I recently just replaced the backlight
too, so my sampler is decked out and ready to rock. I am using the
beast for producing electronic music of the trippy psychedelic/ambient
to noise/glitch and hardcore genres.

I come with a few questions, and I also am prepared to answer a few
questions. I have a good deal of experience with computers and
electronics; I deal with them professionally.

Hi,

I just recently got an akai s1100 for free! and I am trying to get it up to specs, I know nothing of these machines, but i noticed that the backlight isn't working and that has been ordered, How do I use one of these? I would like to modify the floppy drive and convert it to a cf, anyone got a parts list or a tutorial or something?

thanks

congrats on getting ya sampler, does this group have uploaded instruction manual for such a machine?
make sure you have it set in omni midi mode to ensure it plays lots of different sounds ;-)

It will be hard to find a scsi card reader these days. There was a company selling them for cheap a few years ago but all the stock is gone. The only places I see them now are on ebay installed into external enclosures and they are all at or above 250 USD. I got mine for ~70 but unfortunately those deals are long gone. One option is an internal scsi to CF adapter (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CF-AztecMonster-CF-3-5-SCSI-Converter-Card-for-Mac-AKAI-sampler-/261403705340) which is about half the price of the external scsi card readers..
Installation is easy. You just need a 50 pin scsi ribbon cable and a 4 pin molex y cable (power cable for floppy hd).. you have to shave off the divet on the scsi cable with an exacto because the akai's has it the opposite way around for some reason.
with the CF card you can use translator software to write akai images or files to load into your sampler.. but if you go the internal cf route you'll need a scsi pci card and an old XP machine to speak to the sampler.. it is a lot of work!
in the end it is probably more of a pain to do all this to use it but oh well ;) personally i only use mine for playback because sampling/editing on it is a nightmare (imo - i'm from an emu sampler background). however the FX sound amazing, especially the reverb. there is a video on youtube of someone using recycle 2.0 to transfer samples & automatically do the key/group assignments which is extremely useful if you have a computer with scsi that you can work with the akai.

hope you get the cf going - it definitely makes these things a bit easier to use

Hi,

I made that youtube AKAI S1100 SMDI sample transfer youtube video.

I try hard to get SMDI working on my Win 8 64 bit system but no luck so far.

I use a RATOC USB-SCSI cable that have the WIN7/8 64 bit drivers. Installation of this SCSI cable went fine.

Win 8 even reconize a sampler when attached to the cable in device manager, but I can not get the SMDI software Recycle, Wavelab etc.) to recognize the sampler. This has somethin to do with the ASPI drivers.

I tried the Adaptec 32 bit ASPI drivers, Wavelab ASPI, Frogaspi, aspi, RATOC aspi, but no luck so far

If I manage to get this working I lett you all know.

wow - thanks for that video. i found it very helpful. yes ASPI a likely culprit.. not sure if there is a way around that in 64bit os.. Personally I maintain a small xp machine on (micro-itx with an adaptec scsi card) so i can communicate with my old scsi devices. i just vnc into the box to control it so i don't need a monitor/peripherals. it works well and doesn't take up any real space so i'm happy wit that as a solution

Hello and nice score on the akai. My backlight is dead too. Did you
get the replacent or the generic one?

I thought I sent this out to the group but perhaps not. Here is the encoder pot, if you only need that.
